Ammondell, The Mortal Plane

The Mortal Plane of Ammondell is the central realm of creation within the boundless Arcane Sea, a plane of anchored reality amidst the storming tides of divine will, elemental chaos, and ancient madness. Ammondell is where gods walk in myths, magic bleeds into soil, and destiny is shaped by the ambitions of mortals and immortals alike.

Suspended between planes of light and shadow, the Mortal Plane is riddled with thin veils and ancient gates—portals through which other realms may seep, surge, or subtly seduce.

The Arcane Sea

The Arcane Sea is the metaphysical ocean in which all planes drift, churn, and collide. It is the source of all raw magical potential—volatile, infinite, and indifferent. Planes such as Ammondell, the Celestial Realms, Hel, the Elemental Realms, the Abyss, and the Feywild are like isles or vortexes upon its infinite surface.

Ammondell is unique among these because it is anchored—woven tightly into the Arcane Sea by ancient leylines, divine bonds, and forgotten sacrifices. But even its anchors cannot prevent outside tides from spilling through in places where reality wears thin.

Celestial Planes

Floating above Ammondell in the Sea’s radiant currents are the Celestial Planes, home to the Prime Gods. These are realms of perfected essence and order:

  • Caelestis – the solar dominion of Caudiel, where the sun never falters.
  • The Eternal Spiral – ruled by Varaal, a clockwork vastness of logic and wyrms.
  • The Silver ReflectionLiupan’s tidal dreamscape, where memories drift like mist.

The Celestials are not omnipresent but ever-watching, intervening when cosmic balances risk collapse.

Hel

Far beneath the Arcane Sea lies Hel, the Ninefold Pit of Lawful Damnation, a place of iron-clad pacts and soul-marking debts. Its circles are ruled by archdevils, many of whom were once gods cast down by their own ambition. Though opposed to the Abyss, Hel is just as dangerous—its weapons are laws, contracts, and slow corruption.

The Abyss (Shadowfell)

Known in mortal tongues as both the Abyss and the Shadowfell, this planar sinkhole is a realm of entropy, despair, and madness, swirling endlessly in the Sea’s blackest trench. Its nature defies structure: one moment a gray wasteland of echoes, the next a teeming layer of demonspawn. At its heart slumbers Arasta the Spider Queen, bound beneath the Mortal Plane by ancient magic.

In many myths, the Shadowfell is the Abyss mirrored through mortal fear—a reflection of death and desolation that reaches through dreams, death, and darkness.

The Feywild

The Feywild, or the Verdant Veil, is a luminous, shifting echo of Ammondell—where emotion manifests as geography and time loops like a song’s refrain. Governed by archfey, primal forces, and seasonal courts, it is as beautiful as it is dangerous.

In places where joy, sorrow, or untamed nature run deep, the veil between Ammondell and the Feywild grows thin.

Known Feywild Portals:

  • Northwest Phaerumcor – Deep in the mist-shrouded groves of the Barrowlight Hills, this stable rift is guarded by a secretive eladrin conclave and blooms only during the vernal equinox.
  • Houndswood Forest, Uuthraal – Hidden in a ring of petrified trees, this portal pulses with wild magic and is said to be older than written language. Fey creatures sometimes emerge when the moon is full.

Elemental Planes & Portals

Though once sealed by the Binding Accord, the Elemental Planes remain active through ley-conduits and breaches, often focused through Elemental Nodes scattered across Ammondell.

Plane of Water

  • Isle of the Blood Moon – In a sunken temple beneath the island's inland sea lies a swirling gate to Thalmyra, the Plane of Water. Sea witches, sahuagin, and deep merfolk war for control of its tides.

Plane of Earth

  • Thilhe Allanar – Beneath the sacred crystal gardens of this subterranean elven city lies a sleeping stone-heart portal to Dromethal, the Plane of Earth. It is guarded by the Parade of Pallid Flowers, a druidic order of stone-sages and memory-keepers.

Plane of Air

  • The Wandering Mountains – Atop the highest spire of this wind-carved range lies a cloudstone arch leading to Vaelyss, the Boundless Skies. The Barkskin Movement, a sect of sylvan wind-monks and elemental-touched rangers, defends its purity.

Plane of Fire

  • Near Dullbend, Setias – Deep beneath the obsidian caverns north of the city, a glowing rift to Pyraxis is protected by a clan of fire giants bound to an ancient oath. They allow passage only to those who survive a trial by flame.

Known Abyssal (Shadowfell) Portals

Setian Jungle

A vast, overgrown temple complex choked by creeping rot and fungal blooms hides a portal to the Abyss / Shadowfell. The air is perpetually still, and shadows move unnaturally. Cults of Arasta and carrion demons are known to gather here, attempting to widen the breach.

Conclusion

The Mortal Plane of Ammondell is more than a stage for mortal life—it is a keystone in the vast cosmological architecture of the Arcane Sea. Its porous edges, ancient bindings, and portal-rich landscape make it a nexus of conflict, transformation, and awakening. To walk its lands is to be ever on the edge of something more—a door, a dream, a damnation.
