The Water Song

A young boy sat awake on his bed looking out of the window. There was a small road that separated his house from the beach. The dusk sun always cast shade from his house onto the lapping waves. He hated the sound of the waves splashing on the shore as they always kept him awake. He tried to plug his ears, but the sounds pressed through his hands. He tried to block the window, but the crashing waves beat through. He tried to hum to himself, but he would become bored. The young boy was tired and only wanted to sleep.   As his mother called him to breakfast, she asked him why he was so tired. He was nearly falling into his oatmeal. He explained to his mother that the waves were so loud that he couldn't fall asleep. "I tried, but the water kept talking. I tried to plug my ears, but it pressed through my hands. I tried to block the window, but the crashing waves beat through. I tried to hum, but it was too boring. I don't know what to do!" he exclaimed.   His mother stroked his head and said to him, "Next time when you hear the water, listen the what it says." The young boy shrugged his shoulders. The water would simply splash against the beach. He didn't need to listen to the water. He could still hear it! He ate his oatmeal and went to the market with his mother.   When it was finally time for the young boy to go to bed, and he was awfully tired, he could still hear the splashing waves rolling over the sand. "Splash, splash, splash!" he complained to himself. "Splash, splash, splash," he spoke to himself. "Splash, splash, splash," he whispered to himself. Finally, he was asleep.   When he woke up, he found his mother and told him how well he slept. She nodded affectionately. "I listened to the water! It goes splash, splash, splash!" the young boy explained simply.   "It's a soothing song, isn't it?" the mother asked.   "Yes!" said the young boy.   She leaned down to him and held him tight. "Sometimes, when we're tired, sick, or lonely, the constant things in our lives might annoy us. We might try to press our hands to our ears, cover our windows, or hum, but they'll still be there. The song doesn't change, it's just how we listen to it."
