Craig Halverson
Dr. Craig Halverson (a.k.a. 'James Denton')
Born in 1908 on June the Fifth, Craig Halverson has grown up on the New Mexican side of the border with Texas. He was born to an Orc woman from Mexico, Simone Arámbula, and a white man, Dale Marshall.
Arámbula moved to America in an attempt to get away from famous politician and ex-lover Plutarco Elias Calles. She worked training horses and entertaining guests at a cantina in El Paso. There she married Marshall, who was celebrating hunting down a bank robber who was attempting to flee from New Mexico to Mexico proper through Texas. She now trains horses in Chapparal, New Mexico.
Marshall was a member of the New Mexico Mounted Patrol, and played a part on General Pershing’s push into Mexico in search of Pancho Villa, who attacked an American town in New Mexico. During the expedition he lost his left leg and had to retire. He now lives in a wheelchair on a government pension and works part time at a hardware store.
Craig went to catholic schools until college, where he moved to Odessa, Texas to study for medical school. In his early life he was introduced to a blend of English and Hispanic customs. At college he learned French and was introduced to the socialist movement. In learning of his family’s history, he began to grow distant with his father who served in the Mounted Patrol. He also learned an intense hatred for General Pershing, whose combat tactics and attack against Villa were angering.
In 1930 he moved to Omaha to work at a clinic for stockyard workers. It was there he actually joined the labor movement. His attempts to get workers injured from negligent bosses and lack of safety on the floor was found out by his bosses, who fired him. After that he was invited into a higher role in the Communist Party of America and began working under Earl Browder, leader of the CPUSA.
Earlier texts out of the Soviet Union were eagerly accepted by the Party and those in it. For awhile, hardline Stalinism was the only way to have actual support from Moscow, and had to sign loyalty contracts to them. Self-reflection sowed doubt, though, and Craig began to doubt the Stalinist methods on building socialism. Especially after the rumors came out of the false trials, mass executions, and terror campaigns.
He continued to work for labor rights in Omaha, and was the CPUSA candidate in the mayoral race three times. Things began to sour in 1940, however, with the signing of the Molotov-Ribbentropp Pact. Public image turned hostile against the party, especially with its signed loyalty to Stalin. Earl Browder was shortly arrested for passport fraud, and soon a domino effect of mass arrests of Communists and Anarchists popped up across the country.
Craig, fearing arrest of himself, and Browder, fearing seizure of Party assets, hatched a plan through Browder’s attorney. Craig would travel to England to volunteer in a mercenary group against the Nazis and Browder would use his attorney to ship Craig assets to the Party, to be sent back at a time when they were safe. Craig took the moniker ‘James Denton’ from incorrectly reading ‘James Dean’ from a transport manifest in Indiana on his way to England.
