Interia (Interia)

Interia, also known as the Kingdom of Interia, or the Innerlands, is a sovereign nation, a feudalistic absolute monarchy, and a former signatory of the Accord of Hernomacia. With capital in the city of Fnisurza, it is formed by nine minor provinces, which are further subdivided into twenty-two counties.   It borders a lot of countries, most of which are separated via some major geographic accident: The Howlers separate it from the country of Tita from the south-east, the Durtonas, and the Haverner Peaks almost cover the complete border with the country of Sehyon on the south-west, also covered by the Blue Forest, The Adelaids cross most of the frontier with the Kingdom of Bosmia to the north-west, as well as a small part of the frontier with Snubia to the north, and the Olbrin dessert parts its frontier with Salalur .This leaves its frontiers with Bakjarla and Jundogenia as its only open frontiers   It's connected to the Ocean via the Epry, a saltwater river formed by a massive crack on the continent left since the era of the Cataclysm which has allowed a seemingly complicated location to be when trying to affect the world, to be one of the key players in both the colonization of Solara, and the colonization of Zephyria, though in this day and age all exclaves it held have declared independence from the mainland.   Interia is characterized by a varied environment, ranging from fertile plains to treacherous swamps and especially, dense forests. The climate is temperate, with mild summers and harsh winters. The land is rich in natural resources, including abundant mineral deposits and the aforementioned forests. Its national animal is the Hydra, and its national tree is gloompine.

Etimology

The name Interia derives from the common name "the interior realms", dating back to the standardization of the common language by the Gavalan Empire. The first time the general region now known as Interia was referred to as such was in the fourth Century B.C. when it was a province of the Gavalan Empire. During those times the Innerlands, comprised of current day Interia, Bakjarla, and great part of Tita, were still a landlocked region, and as such were referred to as the interior realms. By shortening this came to be the interior, then Interior, and finally by a small and gradual shift in accent, the -or morphed into the -a finally leaving us with the name Interia.

Structure

The King or Queen is the most important figure in the political landscape of the country of Interia. Having veto power over anything any lower stratum of nobles rules on any of their duchies and sovereign immunity, they are unbound by laws and only are bound by the loyalty of their subjects. This power is extended to the consort, who is only under the rule of the king or queen themself, making them the second most powerful person in the kingdom. The princes and princesses also have sovereign immunity, but don't have the power to overrule the sayings of minor lords, which doesn't prevent them from "suggesting" what course their land should follow.

After the king, the members of the close council are the most influential people in all of the country. Handpicked by the king, the close council has no inherent power, but most of the decisions the king makes are heavily influenced at best. The close council has no formal positions, but the historically most common positions held in the council are Lord of coin, Lord of land, Lord of armies & Lord of secrets. Most commonly the members of the Council are selected from the nobility, but on exceptional occasions, commoners have been selected to form part of the closed council, this however usually leads to said commoner being granted nobiliary titles.

After the royal family and the closed council, each of the nine minor provinces minus the capital province is controlled by a duke or duchess and as such, is a duchy. Most of these titles are held by descendants of house Silvercrest that were not heirs to the throne, but sometimes a duchy is granted to a member of another royal family as a token of good will and political alignment.

The next stratus after dukes and duchesses, are counts and countesses. The nine provinces are subdivided into twenty-two counties, each ruled by a count or countess that must answer to its duke or duchess.

Finally, each duchy is distributed into smaller fiefs, governed by viscounts or barons, who must answer to their counts directly.

On Law

Once every year, the reigning ruler of the kingdom, the members of the close council, and a representative of the noble families that rule the duchies reunite in the capital to hold the Annual Legislative Conclave, in which laws are discussed, proposed, and ultimately, passed into law. During these meetings, every noble family casts their vote on which laws will be passed, keeping the right of the king to veto any decision and apply an absolute vote that would overrule the votes of the rest of attendants.

On a smaller scale, duchies are allowed to have their own laws that don't interact with the general laws of the country, and can even reinforce some edicts that are seen as too lenient on the criminal. Some laws even call for an even deeper regulation from the duchy, allowing for a relatively regulable penal code to be held across the country. An example of this could be the law of thieves and thugs, which only states that "A duchy has regal authority to instaurate any punishment that does not inquire in the death or torture of citizen in case of theft, thuggery or damage to the city" which the duchy of Dalgrove has interpreted as written here

Culture

Popular culture

The country has a rich culture that spans more than a thousand years of development since its formation, and it incorporates rituals from the times of the Gavalan empire into its festivities, marking the close relation the interian populace has with its past. During the warmer months of the year, the commoners celebrate harvest festivals in honor of Gidi, Goddess of the harvest, to celebrate bountiful harvests, during which they parade across the villages, make offerings, and throw massive parties full of licor, music, and typical dances.     The cult of the forest is also very usual during most months of the year. This ritual is held deep in the forest in honor of both N'aaki, god of the forest, and the fey protect them. Most usually held under the shade of a gloompine, the ritual consists in smoking leaves of satrava plant, and praying for safety of travel, abundant resources, and protection from the beasts the roam the wild.     The cult to the river is also a very important part of the culture of all interians that live close to the Epri. Every year, festivals composed of fishing competitions and boat races are held in honor of the goddess of seas and rivers Adia, which end in offerings being sent to the waters praying for safety in voyage, and good catches for the fishers throught the year.     Other relevant rites are the celebration of the equinoxes, celebrating both the longest day and the longest night in honor of the sun goddess and moon the moon god respectively. During these celebrations great parades are held, clownish effigies are burnt on the streets, street performers represent the love story between the gods of the sky, and fires of artifice are fired into the sky.     During most of these special occasions people are expected to dress in traditional garments of the country, which date from the era of the formation of the country. Each province has their own variation of these garments, but most of them share a common element in a black sash worn very tight for men and a thin green belt for the women

Art

The country has a rich history of artists that hail from within its borders. The great bard Ophelia, who famously wrote the opera "Captain Lars" is said to be a descendant of house Silvercrest herself, and her works are represented by bardic companies through most major cities almost daily.
The famous painter Oldric of Timarent, said to have painted the goddess Adia herself in his Magnum Opus "The lady upstream the Epri" comes as his moniker implies from the city of Timarent, in the county of the same name, and his original paint is held in the Museum of bardic expression of Fnizursa.
The Voigt brothers, famous for their children stories were born in the county of Meherza, and most of their stories reference famous landmarks of the interian countryside, such as the Blue Forest, the Orbei river, and Mount Supri, in the Adelaids.
The country is also acclaimed for its many famous jewelers, metalworkers, and crafters in general, who not only produce great products, but try to maintain a level of artistry on all of them, producing as a result great works of a fusion of art and practicality the nation has gained fame for.

Public Agenda

The country is currently undergoing a politic of closed borders that started six years ago. Land frontiers are constantly being surveyed by soldiers in order to prevent citizens and refugees from leaving the country, as well as in order to prevent travelers from other countries to enter the country. Air space is tightly regulated too, and Leylines have been Jammed, preventing magical transportation methods to work both in and across the country.
This comes tied to a heavy prosecution of all of the races the king has declared "inherently evil" such as goblins, orcs, lizardfolk, or nephilim of demonic blood. This prosecution has led the once peaceful kingdom to a very complicated situation, where commoners have stratified into three different classes: merchants, laborers, and lowlifes. Lowlifes are forbidden to live in the same zones as merchants and laborers even in the few counties that still allow them to live in cities, and they are forced to construct small ghettos where the guard usually enter in order to disrupt their lives.

Assets

The kingdom has vast reserves of precious metals, gained during their colonial period overseas, held in various different major vaults held in the biggest cities in the kingdom, with the vault of the Argent keep, in the capital city of Fnizursa holding the biggest reserve in the country. Copper, silver, and gold reserves have diminished in the last six years due to the minting of the country's coin however, and some nobles have concerns about these metals leaking past the border, but the official stance of the kingdom is that there is currently no issue to be had.
These vaults not only protect precious metals, but also private art pieces, ancient artifacts of great value, jewelry, and other various treasures held by nobility. For this reason they are heavily guarded and often found in the deepest part of heavily fortified garrisons. As great part of this treasure is considered to be property of the kingdom itself, trying to break into one of these vaults is not considered an act of theft, but an act of treason.
Talking of garrisons and fortresses, the country is heavily armored. The country is subdivided into small fiefs, and almost every lord counts with at least a castle, and several watchtowers, some in strategic locations even counting with additional fortresses. Every major city also counts with walling around its central perimeter, in which administrative offices, artisan guilds, gendarmeries, and noblemen mansions and palaces are located.

Army

It's hard to pinpoint the exact numbers of the standing army of the country due to the nature of how it stands, but it can be calculated to stand at around 30.000 Souls. Each county must have an army that hails from their own territory, and numbers vary from region to region, being far more numerous in regions with borders to other countries. All these smaller armies can be recalled to form the bulk of the army in case of war, but the army hailing from the capital is the most important part of it all. Consisting of 3.000 Souls, the royal army is the best armed of the forces of the kingdom, and is composed of all manner of martial warriors and spellcasters.
The armada counts with a total of around 250 boats, most of which are held currently in dockyards due to the current state of affairs of the nation, preventing them from reaching oceanic waters due to the state of closed borders. Most of those ships are being worked on currently so as to make them more advanced and more fit for combat.
The air force amounts to a total of 40 vessels, located in the cities of Fnizursa and Assort, and have not been tested in combat yet. Most of these airships are fabricated for the transport of troops, but some of them are specialized for several scenarios, such as bombing missions and air combat.

Demography and Population

The total population of the country is estimated to be 39.000.000 Souls, of which the estimated amount of those considered "Lowlifes" is 1.000.000 Souls The different provinces have a very varied amount of people living in them, the province of Staraven being the most heavily populated of the nine provinces, and the province of Berdal being the less populated.
The births of the nation exceed the deaths of those who are not considered lowlifes but child mortality and plagues are high due to poor sanitation in the cities. In the case of "Lowlifes" child mortality is even higher, and health conditions are worse.

Territories

The country is divided into nine provinces, eight of which are duchies, and one, the capital province, ruled by the royal family. The provinces are Dalgrove, Selclef, Staraven, Berdal, Frosmo, Sunrid, Sormbrok, Munric, and Crysalwut. Each of these provinces is further divided into a total of twenty-two counties:
  • Dalgrove is divided into the counties of Kasha, Tafza, and Djelifelt.
  • Selclef is composed of the county of Assort.
  • Staraven is comprised of the counties of Becar, Wanedeid, Iealal, and the capital of Fnisurza.
  • Berdal counts with the counties of Oujdirdayt and Timanent.
  • Frosmo is divided into the counties of Meherza and Guergoub
  • Sunrid counties are Abknassaza and Aruten
  • Sormbrok is comprised of the counties of Vazilalt and Boudawanja
  • Munric counts with the counties of Hamzurawak and Xazacem
  • Crysalwut has the counties of Taznakht, Turiblessa, Irourib and Azah
After this, each of the twenty-two counties is further subdivided into more than three hundred fiefs, distributed across the whole kingdom.

Foreign Relations

Foreign diplomatic relations have been severed, as the country has entered an isolationist period. No country has envoys or merchants, and the few nobles who hail from other countries had to sever ties with their countries of origin or lose the fiefs.
The country was a former signatory of the Accord of Hernomacia, which standardized the Hernomachian silver coin across the whole continent of Imai, but has retracted from the accord as of the last six years, and coined its own coined in the silver hydra.  Copper, silver, and gold Hydras are minted in the capital of the country, and are two thirds the size of a standard silver coin.
