The Shadowfell

The Shadowfell is the negative plane counterpart to the Feywild. It, like the Feywild is a reflection of the material plane, however it is comprised of dead grey mountains with scattered cities inhabited solely by shadows and the Palace of Night, where The Raven Queen resides.

Geography

The Shadowfell is devoid of a Sun and has an eternal moon ever present in the sky. Travel is difficult as the terrain is made up of tall mountains and low valleys with little flat land to be found. Caves are common and most often carved out by the dragon inhabitants in order to create a home for themselves. Pools of inky liquid can be found throughout The Shadowfell, these pools are responsible for the creation of new, nameless shadows. The skies are filled with murky dark clouds that never rain, the only light emanating from the moon.

The land is made up of a rocky crust, This rock is known as Lunapis, and is condensed shadow dust, when an entity dies in The Shadowfell, its body(and by being one in the same in The Shadowfell, its soul) disintegrates into shadow dust. Over time, this dust collects and compacts itself into Lunapis. This rock is the primary ingredient in shadow steel.

Entity Interactions

Survival of the fittest is the ruling law, the stronger shadow will devour the weaker shadow, gaining their strength. Shades will also consume shadows in order to take their power. Nameless shadows will also consume shades in order to gain a will of their own and quell their impulsive behavior. Shades will often join with other shades, lead by a Shadonic lord they will form small towns throughout the realm.

Types of Entities

The Shadowfell consists of many natural and unnatural inhabitants including,

-Shades

One of the two forms of Umbra, Shades are the form sapient creatures that come to the Shadowfell take. They possess the mind they did when they were alive, including memories and personality. All Shades are Shadows, but not all Shadows are Shades, the key difference is thinking capability.

-Shadows

The other form of Umbra, Shadows are mindless creatures formed by the unstable shadonic energy found throught the realm. They are driven by instinct and live solitary lives, feeding on anything that it comes by. If a Shadow consumes a Shade, they can develop a personality of their own.

-Shadow Dragons

Shadow Dragons are Terrestrial Dragons which have become trapped within the Shadowfell by some means. The strong shadonic energies have corrupted their souls and made them obsessed with acquiring more power. The Shadow Dragon is the apex predator of the Shadowfell, it will consume shades and shadows alike seemingly without preference. Shadow dragons will also, on occasion consume other shadow dragons and steal their power.

-Shadonic Lords

Shadonic Lords are Umbra which have amassed enough power to manipulate the currents of shadonic energy around them, they are typically leaders of other like minded Umbra, the more power they have, the more they can manipulate the space around them.

Notable Locations

Palace of Night

The Palace of Night

The Palace of Night is the castle in which the Raven Queen resides, with the river of lost souls flowing around it like a moat of sorrow, nestled within The Corvade mountain range, on the tallest mountain, Avery.

Aleph Null

Aleph Null is a city run by Shadonic assassins. ruled over by the Shadonic Lord, Masque. A mortal on the material plane can request their services for a price, depending on the difficulty of the task, ranging from luxury goods not found in The Shadowfell, to more demonic demands such as the contractor's or a family member's soul.

Olatoros

Olatoros is a city of thieves, most goods that come in are circulated by means of stealing, the entire economy runs on stealing. Need something? Steal it from someone who has it, or from people of the material plane, as their luxuries and even their mundane items are highly coveted treasures in the shadowfell, and only the strongest Umbra can travel to the material plane, anything they bring back is all there will be of that item for a while, as it takes an immense amount of energy to travel there and back. Ever wondered where that one sock went? It's probably hanging above the mantle in Liaer's manor.
