The Refraction

The creation of the Multiverse as we know it

At the Dawn of Time

Before anything, there was the Primordial Tether. An amorphous, roiling mass of elemental energies; chaos tethered together by a weave of pure Wild Magic. Then came Prism. Its origins unknown, whether it be a sentient entity or a wild force on its own, the Primordial Tether filtered through Prism, violently rending the Wild Magic weave. As the elemental energies separated and crashed back together, matter began to take shape. Stars began to burn, planets began to form, galaxies took shape. The violent tearing of the weave caused rips in the fabric of reality itself, opening gateways to other voids, which the energies quickly filled, creating other planes of existence. An entire multiverse spawned from chaos. Further more, alongside planets and planes, from these forces life was created. The original gods, primordial entities, and mystical fey were all born here. This event would become known as the Refraction.

Prism

The phenomenon known as Prism is a mystery debated by even the gods who were born from the Refraction. Some believe it was an all-powerful being who, for whatever reason, birthed the multiverse from chaos. Some believe it still lives, hidden away somewhere in the Astral Plane, observing its creation. Some believe it was destroyed in the violence of the Refraction, a piece of itself being a part of every plane in the multiverse. Others believe that Prism was a force as mindless as the chaos it formed into worlds, a random cosmic event. Still others believe that there's no such thing as Prism, that the concept is just a convenient and simple answer to creation.

Wild Magic

Magic is a force which is capable of manipulating the elements and energies of the multiverse. In the beginning, magic formed a weave which tethered the primordial chaos into an unstable mass. When the Refraction happened, the weave was torn asunder. Still, the remnants of the tethers remain, running through all planes in the multiverse. In time, living beings would find ways to pluck at the strands of the weave and harness magic, using it to manipulate the elements and energies for their own means via casting spells. During the creation of the planes by the Refraction, a significant amount of Wild Magic spilled into one of the tears in reality. This result was that of the birth Fae and the first of the fey beings that inhabit it.
