Yuleburgh

Written by Dawn Annex

A sleepy fishing village that resides on the eastern coast of Lake Timorphia. Yuleburgh is home to around 300 citizens consisting mostly of Halflings and Gnomes. This minor town is nestled comfortable between Lake Timorphia and the Suturvian Pass. Due to this prime location, regular visits from merchants and caravans have sustained Yuleburgh, and has provided enough money that the village is able to invest in proper defenses in order to keep themselves safe from whatever denizens are lurking beyond sight in the Raven Lands  A Fishing Guild and Village council are really the only immediate forms of governance that dictate life in Yuleburgh. Most citizens are typically Fishermen, Aquatic Trappers or Farmers. It's this fluctuating balance among these three trades that gives rise to the most unique part of Yuleburgh, the cuisine. While regular dishes have their place in the town, it's what rises from the depths of Lake Timorphia every few months that truly sets Yuleburgh apart.    Due to the regulations in place from the Fishing Guild, Aquatic Trappers can only hunt for 2 months at a time, in order to protect the Lakes ecosystem. After the 2 month period is up the Trappers are unable to hunt until this unique phenomenon occurs. Lake Timorphia is believed to have a fairly uncommon property; the algae that exists among the lake bed seems to bestow some minor form of gigantism. The Lake contains a high concentration of crabs and crayfish that feed upon this algae.  After as a few months of consuming the algae these crustaceans will swell to the size of a bloodhound. Their large size prevents them from satiating their hunger within the lake. This hunger drives them out of the lake (often at night) and onto the surrounding shores. Often times this results in a few farm animals, typically pigs, being consumed by the crustaceans. In fact this is such an expected occurrence, many farmers will house their lame pigs near the lake in order to prevent valuable loses to prize animals. The squeals of the animals often alert the farmers, the crustaceans are then quickly killed and the Fishing Guild opens the lake back up to the residents of Yuleburgh.
"If they take our bacon, then we eat crustacean." - A common Yuleburgian mantra borne from its unique food chain.
