Alterra

The Planet Alterra has seen its share of history and most of it is thoroughly documented throughout the last 10,000 years. Legends exist by word of mouth of ancient artifacts that are rare and found far-between from times before, as well as the guardians of these artifacts, the Zodaqi. These ‘Children of the Stars’ not only protect the artifacts but also the planet’s magic, and some say even the stars in the sky themselves. These artifacts are usually bought up by ultra-wealthy collectors or go mysteriously missing and are never seen again. In the year 1897 AD, the combined races of Alterra are learning how to harness both the power of steam, as well as elementals to drive a new burst of technology and invention. Being come to be called the ‘Servoelemental’ age, many Alterrans are using this time to create inventions with not only practical purpose but intricate beauty and art weaved into its form as well.

However, Worldwise, a worrying trend has emerged where despite the burst of industry and understanding of the natural world, resources seem to be drying up from crops yielding less harvest to ore veins running out faster than expected. Countries from all over Alterra have their theories as to why it’s happening but no one has come up with a concrete answer yet. Whispers among those that still believe in the legends of old, say that magic itself is dying and it should be preserved rather than harnessed for the sake of profit and greed. However, most dismiss the guardians of Alterra as old fairy tales, meant as nothing as precautionary boogey-men passed down among all races and nations to pass the time at night and keep wayward children in line.
