HomeBrew-The Rule of Dru - stealing spell components

Thanks to the ingenuity of Dru we now have a new way to address the threat of spell casters, so I feel a need to set some basic ground rules on how we will work this.
  1. While we do have this new attack vector created by Dru, I do not want to turn that into a tracking nightmare. General components are still managed “in general” – we just have to account for where they are stored, including those special items (100gp pearls)
  2. How/where you store your components will impact a thieves’ ability to take them from you as noted below
  3. Picking the components of a specific spell from a target will be crazy difficult Picking a pocket is a single roll, a contested test of the thief’s Sleight of Hand against the target’s perception.
  The Dru Rule:
The thief has to succeed against the target DC (based on what they want and where it is) and beat the target’s Perception roll.
Note: If the thief wants the theft to be not noticed they will also need to make a stealth roll to hide the components floating away from the target

1 – The thief must have:
  • Clear line of sight to the target’s hands
  • An available reaction and success on a contested Dex roll to attempt this before the spell has been cast and
  • Not have moved in their last action (to focus)
After a success the thief then rolls to determine how many components were taken (referred to as Components Grabbed). (see external table)
2 – Plus your proficiency bonus + your Intelligence modifier (this may be removed later) When components are taken normally3 they are taken from a random spell requiring components from the caster’s list using the following rules:
  • The caster will roll randomly for the first spell, then the level of that spell is reduced from the Components Grabbed
  • The caster will then roll again for the next spell, reducing the Components Grabbed by the spell’s level
  • Repeat Step 2 until Components Grabbed equals zero
A target cannot cast any spell without its full components. Thus, if the Components Grabbed roll does not reach the full spell level, that spell still cannot be used because part of the components have been taken.
