Elf, Avariel
https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Avariel
In this world the Avariel of history lived in cities that floated in the clouds (similar to Cloud Giant castles but much larger). There were at least 3 major cities (with populations reaching tens of thousands) as well as dozens of smaller cities that travelled across Toril.
The downfall of the Avariel started several hundred years before the start of the campaign. Living in the skies gave the Avariel a chance to see some events before the people on the ground were aware an issue was starting. For this reason the Avariel have stepped in several times when the Cult of the Dragon started gathering forces to bring Tiamat back to the Prime Material plane.
Recent History recorded two major interactions with the Cult that had a major impact to the Avariel.
The first was a major conflict In 1248 when the Avariel worked with an alliance with Cloud Giants, Storm Giants, and a group of good aligned Dragons to stop the Cults actions. This conflict went on over the period of several months and drove the Cult underground and lived on in the memories of all of the involved groups.
The second conflict was in 1375 where a small group of Avariel (only 15 people) stopped the Cult again as it moved to advance the agenda. While minor, this conflict made the Avariel a target for the Cult, and two decades later the Cult took action.
If was in 1422 that the Cult coordinated an attack against the Avariel. In one day the Cult used the Draakhorn to coordinatd a simultaneous attack against all of the Avariel cities by hundreds of evil Dragons. The Avariel, not understanding this was a Toril-wide coordinated attack, focused on removing the threat of the Draakhorn. While the Cult lost the Draakhorn, their coordianted attack did enough damage that two of the major cities had crashed into the earth, and the third was last seenburning heading west over the Sea of Swords. Many of the smaller flying cities and villages crashed into Faerun and none of these have been seen in decades.
Many of the surviving Avariel tried to establish ground based settlements, but being on the ground made them easier for the Cult to discover. There are many stories of chromatic dragons being seeing in groups attacking villages in the mountains.
Today Avariel are among the most rarely seen elvish races in Faerun. Rumors state that the survivors feld Faerun to other lands of Toril where the Cult has no reach.
