The Huatlialli Religion
The religion practiced by the Kuchmak of Huatlialli
Mythology & Lore
One of the main myths that underpin the Huatlialli religion is that the sentient species were created by Problu, the god of chaos.
Tenets of Faith
The main branch of the Huatlialli religion worship Tiklo, the god of order.
Since they also believe they were created by the god of chaos, they believe their birth and very existence are sins, and they must spend their lives repenting for those sins.
Ethics
A consequence of the Huatlialli faith is that the faithful view people who don't at least act in a way that attempts to maintain order and general "goodness" with disdain.
Worship
An important part of their religion is making up for being born.
So the truly faithful spend their lives trying to repair the chaos they brought into the world, and punish themselves, sometimes with Self-flagellation.
Priesthood
The priests are divided into three temples:
They have a strong affinity to light magic, and tend to be kind and compassionate people. Out of the priests, the most compassionate one is selected to be “na’aj k’in” (first priest) and is the head of the temple until his death, when a new na'aj k'in is elected. Kuchmak who are born under moon phases close enough to those of the priests can join as “winak” (servant), to help around the temple with the non religious tasks.
They have a strong affinity to ? magic, and tend to be ? and ? people.
The temple of the sun
Kuchmak who are born under all three moons full are raised to be priests of the Sun god Linurahir.They have a strong affinity to light magic, and tend to be kind and compassionate people. Kuchmak who are born under moon phases close enough to those of the priests can join as “winak” (servant), to help around the temple with the non religious tasks.
The temple of the moons
Kuchmak who are born under one full moon and two new moons are raised to be priests of the moons. Unlike the temple of the sun, where all priests are dedicated to Linurahir, in the temple of the moons the priests are dedicated to the moon they were born under.They have a strong affinity to ? magic, and tend to be ? and ? people.
The temple of balance
Kuchmak who are born under .. moon in first quarter and ... moon in third quarter (or vice versa) with .... moon unseen are raised to be priests of balance, dedicated to Tiklo.The temple of chaos
Kuchmak that live in a community that worships both order and chaos and are born under 3 new moons are raised to be priests of chaos. They have a strong affinity to void magic, and tend to be rash, spontaneous and capricious people with great passion.Sects
Two main sects have branched where the branched off sects actually worship either both gods, or only Problu.
The relationship between the different branches is very tense.
The main branch sees all others as terrible heretics that must be eliminated.
The second branch sees both others as incomplete since they worship only one side of the equation.
The third branch would have been happy to ignore the others, but have to avoid being eliminated, so they can't completely ignore the first branch.
