The Hinterlanders
The Hinterlands, now the holdings of Banyek, are a historically disputed region south of Okredek and Tosek and north of the great mountains, north-west of Cyiros. The region has long been a point of conflict between Okredek and Tosek. The region was more symbolic than anything else as it is resource poor. There were however a number of settler parties, backed by their respective home countries, who settled in the Hinterlands over the last 300 years.
The vast majority of those who settled the region did so to escape religious persecution in their homelands. They were followers a distinct sect of the Mirjiini Temple focussed on the worship of the uncorrupted forms of the Mirjiini deities. This was in direct contradiction of the Temple's doctrine of facing the struggle for re-purification directly. In the year 126BU, the Temple declared it a sin to worship the uncorrupted deities on the basis that the corruption was a necessary part of repentance for the sin of the fallen empire. Many of those who worshipped the uncorrupted gods refused to change and left the kingdoms proper as Hinterlands settlers.
Many of the settlers received support of the local lords of their homelands (mostly Okredek, Tosek and the confederation of Mirjiin) who wanted the strengthen their claim over the region and who were happy to be rid of their heretic subset. Despite this, the Hinterlanders, who were outcasts in their homelands, broadly speaking have no loyalty to the more northerly kingdoms.
When the Ban shamans declared the sovereignty of the holdings of Banyek, they received almost ubiquitous support from the Hinterlands. Before the foundation of Banyek, the Hinterlander were loosely unified under a number of particularly old and respected families. All 11 of the most respected Hinterlander families supported the independence of Banyek and the Banyeki Hinterlanders are mostly able to manage the few dissenters.
