Shafeire Laersche

Illicit Ring Attendant

Shafeire Laersche is a young Adairian who gets by as an illicit fight ring attendant in Madhiba’s underground, Iba. They were born and raised in Madhiba by their rhiant geni, meaning “birth parent” in the Adair language—colloquially shortened to geni. Their geni raised them single handedly for most of their life, as their rhiant priod—meaning “married parent”, colloquially shortened to priod—had been killed in a past raid when they were extremely young. Because of this, Shafeire was forced to grow up quickly to help support their geni and sustain their little family.   Shafeire prides themself on their insight and street smarts, their anticipative nature always predicting the next move; however their maturity oftentimes takes a toll on their emotional and psychological wellbeing. They constantly worry, to the point where their geni calls them paranoid. They always say they aren’t, but it is somewhat warranted.   When they were an infant, Shafeire was drawn to Murtair, Adairian deity of night and stealth; because of this decision, they now participate in the Adair military’s stealth unit to fulfill their active military service and to worship their chosen deity. Despite this connection with Murtair, Shafeire is especially zealous in their worship to Lèigh-Lann during Troscadh and the Day of Deities because their geni is a worshiper of Lèigh-Lann. To make sure they stay well-rounded in life, their geni teaches them to balance the coldness of Murtair with the warmth of Lèigh-Lann.   They have many scars from their service, their workplace, and their rare encounters with Hilaelian officials. Some of their smaller scars are from inoculation training, where they were deliberately injected with small amounts of poisons and afflicted with mild castings of harmful magics to build up a resistance to them, to familiarize themselves with the effects, and to be able to identify them under pressure. Many of these have since healed over, but some of the most noticeable scars are the ones that have healed on their face and chest. Shafeire doesn’t talk much about these larger scars because they don’t want to worry the people around them.   During the night, they work many long hours ringside in Iba to support both them and their geni. Working in Iba is a thankless job; there is always a chance of being injured by rogue magic, strange beasts, and the many wretches that populate the cavernous underground. Between looking out for their geni and looking out for themselves, there is almost no time for Shafeire to sleep.   With the tensions between Madh and Iba rising, Shafeire worries there might come a time when the Hilaelian authorities from the surface will purge the underground completely. They worry that their geni, as strong and knowledgeable as they are, won’t make it out due to their deteriorating health and growing age.
