Seshat El Medin Marketplace
Within the sprawling island of Seshat is a thriving marketplace nestled between the suffocating wealthy residential to the North, the University grounds to the West, and the active fishing district to the South. The market district was traditionally established by the Adairian people in cooperation with 3 students who had been kicked out of the University of Toth for misconduct and inability to learn. These disgruntled students were able to connect with the Adairian because they had grown up in the working class of the island and had friends within the commune. Once they had connected, the Adair took the market as a place to sell the resources only the Southern half of the island had to offer, but also the excess from their raids that were of no use to them. This eventually led to the Adair taking more than they needed from people so that they could trade more for island resources.
The market utilizes an assortment of payment methods because physical money has almost no role in most of the shopkeeper’s lives. Bartering and trading with cooked dishes, shells, seeds, and especially exotics from the island are just a few examples of non-traditional payment methods that are allowed. The market district is active every day of the year, but the variety of shops differs. This is because of the mixture of Adairian and Astorian shopkeeper cultural identity and the days that they hold sacred, the Adair will not work on Troscadh or Cha, the Astorian will not work The Festival of the Seasons, and nobody but food vendors work on Limahj. After many years the marketplace began to catch the attention of the wealthy Hilleal and Astorian people, who now frequent the market especially for treasures that can only be found within the mainland. This marketplace is a space for everyone on the island to connect despite differences of lifestyle and the labor issues of the island.
