Sailor’s Crawl
The Sailor’s Crawl refers to a street of outdoor dining establishments in Taqātu. Tables and chairs line the stone street during the day where both shoppers and sellers take a break from the bustle of Iilla Markaaz. Merchants and various traders make connections here, cementing trade partnerships and deals over food. This has resulted in a ‘sit anywhere’ culture, where open seats are fair game and conversation between strangers is encouraged.
Sailor’s Crawl got its name from the early days. When masses of people were still coming from the old country, feasts would be held for those that survived the journey at sea. Not everyone survived the harsh journey, and to this day Hilealeans are considered descendents of Deshret’s chosen, entrusted with the task of spreading its faith. The feast was both a reward for their resilience and thanks to Deshret for guiding them safely.
Since Hilealean nations were still getting their footing at the time, these celebrations would take place right on the shoreline. Chefs would prepare dishes and meals over campfires outside, and people welcomed the new Hilealeans with open arms.
Now that the coastline is overcrowded with travelers and locals who despise them, the tradition has long since been abandoned. A new ‘Sailor’s Crawl’ was formed in Taqātu for traders and merchants who have traveled long distances. Because merchants are generally more tolerant of foreigners than other classes, it’s also one of the only places in Tahwil where you can get Astorian cuisine and mixed fusions. True to a sailor’s dream: good food, drink, and company.
