Chylukh

Chylukh refers to a city quarter of Ąpawičhak’ya where Adairians live. When Astorians first pushed the Adair north to found Ąpawičhak’ya, many Adairian communes moved to the forests but some resisted and stayed. They felt as though their possessions and homes were being stolen from; retreating would be giving up.   Not just anyone can enter Chylukh. Being Adairian isn’t good enough: for the safety of the communes, any outsiders must be vouched for before they can be trusted. Inside, there are multiple communes each with their own Cea. The communes had originally wanted to stay separate, but Astorian nobility wanted to keep them in the same rundown area. Chylukh is an overpopulated, poor area that’s been walled off to keep Adarians in and any aggressive Astorians out. Guards are always stationed at the entrance.   What makes Chylukh different from other communes is that they have one Rial for multiple communes. Previous attempts at unifying the communes have failed, and now they’ve developed a system of cluster groups. The Rial’s job is to protect the quarter itself and deal with high class Astorians, as well as make the final call on outsiders. The Cea’s of each commune are concerned with delegating who can create the elixir, and the logistics of who goes to collect materials. Patrons of Talamh and Lèigh-Lann will usually be sent out of the capital for herb collection and have the most connection to forest communes.   Currently, the upper echelon of nobility is too focused on the war with Hilael to be that concerned with the free spirited. Adairians are scorned and dismissed, but tolerated. The merchant class in particular has taken a liking to these Adairians for their usefulness; Chylukh communes will sometimes agree to fight monsters in the Boreal Valley and execute shady, under-the-counter killings in return for elixir materials. Patrons of Murtair often choose to stay in the capital so they can show their devotion in this way. Patrons of Ghri also tend to choose the city for its blacksmithing hub near Chaska Bastion. Though patrons of all six deities reside in Chylukh, the ratio is skewed in Murtair and Ghri's favor.   There's debate among the Adairians who moved north on whether this behavior makes Chylukh communes true adherents or glorified Astorians. Chylukh’s existence certainly makes it easier for Adarians to move in and out of the city, but they’ve been taught to take what they want by force, not bargain. Regardless of opinion, Chylukh is a place of safety for an Adairian who knows the right people.
