The Sisters of Saraneth

"I'm sorry, my lord, but she has passed from these mortal lands. We must summon the Sisters to deal with the body as Saraneth shepherds the soul."   The Sisters of Saraneth are a mysterious and sorrowful group. Comprised entirely of women, they are trained in the arts of embalming and burial, and are summoned by the city to care for and dispose of the deceased.   There is a small sect in each major city, with typically one or two Sisters located in smaller settlements. They train their own, with older members taking on apprentices as needed to pass on the skills and knowledge needed for caring for the dead. They are often the first on the scene of a death, almost as if they are drawn to it. They attribute this talent to their partron, Saraneth; Goddess of Death. They are sometimes viewed as priestesses, passing on a comforting message or murmuring a prayer alongside the deceased's loved ones to quiet their hearts. Though this is not their original intended holy purpose, the Sisters have come to view this as a necessary branch of their chosen path and understand it to be among their duties.   The Sisters are trained in many different cultures' burial styles. For some, they embalm the bodies and commit them to the earth. For others, they prepare a water burial. Cremation is the most popular, as most are too poor to afford a gravestone or plot of land. They can prepare and tidy up bodies for public viewing if the need arises, and are also frequently considered as morticians, cemetary attendants and spirit mediums.   The Sisters are bound closely to Saraneth; Goddess of Death and spread her praise and influence quietly through their actions. The eldest of the order wear blindfolds over their eyes - they say this is to block the vision of the mortal world, to better peer into the afterlife where Saraneth dwells.    To a lesser degree, they also offer praise to Charr; God of the Afterlife, though they recognize their duty to the world the same as Saraneth's - to deal with the body as Saraneth deals with the soul.
