Copper the Bard

The Mysterious Bard of the Alder Forest

"The rules are quite simple if you can assemble -- a rhyme that will impress me if you would so kindly! I toss out a rhyme, and you respond in kind! Finish my sonnet, and I promise I’ll make it worth it!"
— Copper's introduction to Hexblade

Copper the Bard is a Human Spirit wandering the premises of the Alder Forest. A master in lyrical wordplay, he is a bard of competent caliber, though, despite such skills, he claims he only earns copper; such is the origin of his namesake.

He currently adventures alongside the adventuring party, Hexblade, forming a bond with the group's fairy bard, Aine.

Personal history

The Nameless Bard
“Flyting is a battle of words, a test of the mind. Prose and pride from one sentence combined! Let me start!”
— Copper engaging Hexblade with a bout of lyrical jousting

Copper was introduced in the A Tale of Six Swords campaign as a wandering bard that challenged the adventuring party Hexblade to a battle of wits. He called such an activity a bout of lyrical jousting known as flyting. If the adventurers could best him, he would give them magical items he found along his travels. Hexblade succeeded in satisfying all three bouts, giving them his reward. Seemingly out of the blue, as he arrived, he disappeared mysteriously, a hint that Copper was not as he seemed.

Spiritual Connection with Aine
"Perhaps I can be your patron of some sorts? A patron who only earns copper? We will strike fear in our enemies!"
— Copper expressing his interest in joining Hexblade

While the flyting battle was the last Hexblade had seen of Copper, he reappeared when Aine attempted to cast the spell Crown of Thorns on a cultist during their incursion into the Sanctum of the Omnipotent One. Copper denoted that Aine's magic began to guide him towards a path in the ethereal plane. He described it almost like a siren singing and luring sailors into the sea. And before he knew it, Copper appeared by Aine's side, holding her flower crown.

At that moment, Aine was the only one who could see Copper. This led the two of them to believe that Aine had some unique connection to spirits and, much to his dismay, confirmed Copper's suspicions. After accompanying her in their incursion of the temple, they shared a conversation. Copper confessed that he suffered amnesia. He could not remember who he was or what he was doing in the forest; he had just suddenly awakened in it with a lute. The bard spirit was proficient at making music, so he wandered the forest, assuming that was his purpose.

Copper confessed to Aine that he was afraid of knowing more about himself. He did not understand what he was or what his purpose was. He held very vague memories of gallivanting, adventuring, and debauchery. But he was unsure whether these memories were his or someone else's. He expresses a disconnect between such memories and his personality.

The two decided to broker a deal where Copper could act as Aine's 'patron' or 'familiar.' The two entered a contract where Aine would help Copper discover himself and his purpose as a spirit.

The Veil

As Hexblade's adventures continued, they found themselves back in the Alder Forest after an incident that caused a village-wide manhunt on their party. As the Pilgrimage of Departure drew near, paranormal events occurred within the forest. Copper appeared before Aine, proclaiming that he sensed impending danger ahead. The bard spirit disappeared, seemingly going elsewhere before Hexblade was transported into a different plane of existence.

The party met a spirit called Justice, a seemingly cryptic and eerie warden of lost souls. He proclaims that because of what Copper is, an errant spirit refusing to merge with the natural flow of life, he is a danger to the cycle of life and death as they know it. After their verbal exchange with the seemingly daunting spirit, Copper reappeared to the party, his first appearance since their bout of lyrical jousting. The bard spirit looked much older, almost as if he had aged about seven years. His brownish hair has streaks of grey hair, and the wrinkles on his face are more prominent.

Copper says that the spirit known as Justice had been hunting him since the Pilgrimage drew near. He managed to evade him successfully, but it would only be a matter of time before the warden catches him. Aine reassures that she would not let that happen and promises to keep Copper safe as per their promise together.
