Dark Elves

Surface Dwellers believe the Dark Elves to be power-hungry, greedy, self-absorbed bringers of suffering, pain, and hate. They would be correct. The Dark Elves (otherwise known as Drow) live in the Underdark, a world below the surface as vast and varied as the surface, but many times as dangerous. As such, the denizens that call the Underdark home are forced to be as mean and dangerous as the environment that surrounds them.   The entirety of Drow society revolves around the worship of Lloth, a spider Goddess who wants her will to be spread out upon the world. Unfortunately, there is little guidance as to HOW her doctrine is to be spread, and over time, Drow factions have taken it upon themselves to spread the doctrine as they see fit. As such, the Drow have fractured into houses, with each house in a state of perpetual civil war with the other houses. Theoretically, the war has to do with the proper way to spread Lloth’s influence, but neutral observers can simply tell it’s all about power. House alliances come and go, houses are destroyed, absorbed, and split. At any one time, there are rumored to be between seven and twelve Drow houses.   Drow are a matriarchal society. Men have no rights. Women hold all positions of power – rulers, judges, priestesses, military, merchants, and any other position that holds any remote level of responsibility. Girls begin combat training as soon as they can walk, and girls very quickly learn that life is about taking what you want. The gifts you receive in the Underdark are the ones you take. Men are kept for menial tasks and entertainment.   Drow, especially those in power, tend to be manically cautious. Lack of even minor loyalty leads to severe punishment. Torture to the point of death is not uncommon. Advancement through assassination, treachery, blackmail, and full-on revolt is the norm. This advancement is just as common within houses, and even families, as it is outside the houses. Those in power consider it a test as part of survival of the fittest.   Males are considered second class citizens. Males tend to be ignored and overlooked. They are thought to be inferior to females to the point that males simply can’t comprehend the complex societal issues of the Drow. They are dismissed in general. However, if they follow directions, they tend to live longer than Drow females.   Below males on the hierarchal order is the slaves.  Drow LOVE to kidnap and bring in slaves.  Any type of slaves can be used by the Drow.  Strong workers will be used for labor.  Females used for indoor menial tasks.  Those that are too weak, or can't be broken are sacrificed to the goddess.  It's not a matter of whether or not a slave can be useful, it's HOW they are going to be useful.   The slave market may be the one place in Drow society that is a neutral ground.  it's recognized that if bitter conflict was allowed to happen in the slave market, valuable merchandise could be damaged, or destroyed.  Not to say that verbal barbs are not traded, but direct, or even indirect conflict is frowned upon.
