The Codex Tenebris

Lao-Wen almost dropped the book.   Key word: almost. That hadn't stopped his diminutive companion from turning and snapping at him all the same. While it didn't usually take much to set Fractis off, he had been jumpy ever since they had been assigned to move this tome. The dwarf spun around with a frantic look in his eye, his expression seemingly more of terror than rage. As Lao-Wen caught himself, he fell back on his rump, sitting square on the descent of stairs leading to the Order's archives. The elf stifled a small giggle as he picked himself back up, gripping the massive book with a stronger arm this time to account for its weight.   "Old friend, what's with the ghastly look on your face? I only tripped."   The dwarf grimaced.   "That book is worth more than lives of every man, woman, and child that lives in this country. Do not drop it."   Lao-Wen laughed. "Why Fractis, I've never known you to joke about things!"   They continued their descent, reaching the bottom of the stairwell before the great expanse of dark knowledge kept within the monastery. They came before a table, painted in blood and covered in illustrations of demons older than time itself, an indent perfectly fitted for the massive, black tome had been etched in the center. Fractis looked up at his partner, worry and fear sown upon his face.   "I don't."

Purpose

The Codex Tenebris is the oldest surviving text in the world, with its creation being dated to some time around 40-75,000 years ago, depending on accounts and investigations. Its contents were written by Enoch, the self-same ancient scribe who recorded the War of Genesis some 150,000 years ago. No one is certain how old Enoch himself was, or how long he spent transcribing the Codex. The book is a catalog of every single demon, monster, and infernal creature to have ever walked upon the Terre in the ancient times. It details these beasts, what masters they serve, and the necessary feats to summon them. It is also a book sacred to all orders of Blood Hunters, as it is this book that holds the secrets of creating the Hunter's Bane, as well as the techniques, magics, and devices Enoch used to complete his research.
