The world
Humanity
While the old human governments are stuck on Earth, powerful companies-empires have brought humanity into space. They have colonised planets and rule over them, keeping their citizens employees under tight control. Since their owners have become the all-powerful emperors of their new worlds, their only aim is to break the limits of humanity itself...
The story starts in the research space station dedicated to this goal.
The aliens
During its space travel, humanity has come across a few other species, but none of them they considered intelligent. One of them, the Aliens, even showed a strong fondness for human flesh and has devastated any crews that have come across them.
However, those monsters have also shown some unique characteristics: when exposed to space, they go into hibernation and are able to survive without oxygen, food or water in freezing temperatures. They also show no signs of aging after over a century of captivity. But more than that, they have also some strange "psy powers".
This makes them a source of strong fascination for the owners of the company who has discovered them.
The experiment
The owners covet the alien monsters' abilities for themselves. The first step in getting them is obviously to better understand their biology and its interaction with their psy powers and strong health so that the company's scientists will be able to inject the right genes into the owners without killing them or destroying their human intelligence.
As part of their research, the scientists have created a new generation of genetically modified babies that share human and alien genes. They are raising and studying them, regularly designing new dangerous challenges in which to put them through to better understand how their brain and biology works and to trigger their instincts and get them to show some psy abilities.
In the 30 years this experiment has run, this last objective has not been successful, and the numbers of babies has gone from 100 to a mere 13...
The characters
The teams
The babies were born using DNA from some of the scientists in the space station, who were then given the task of nurturing and raising them to give them a stable psychology. Depending on the prestige of their parents, the babies were divided into teams named after the Latin and Greek alphabets (26 and 24 letters, respectively), with a girl and a boy in each team. The babies' names all start with the letter of their team.Main character
Abéline is one of those babies. She was created from the DNA of the head scientist and his wife (his non-scientist assistant) and so is part of Team A. She is clever and curious and good at thinking outside of the box. This has led her to be the one to find the "solution" to most of the challenges the babies were put through, helping the entire group survive.
Her "brother" Alex is her partner in Team A. He is the unofficial leader of the babies. He is very protective of everyone and also has a deep trust in A's advice. Together, they form the perfect team to manipulate the caretakers and scientists into getting what they want.
The other babies
With only 13 babies left, the relationships between them are both stronger and tenser. Everyone has been hurt by the loss of their siblings and friends and is looking for culprits, and everyone is also stressed at the nose slowly closing on them, leading to their imminent death. At the same time, they know that they have only survive so long because of their close links and willingness to collaborate and trust each other.
The future
As the story starts, baby number 14 has just died, it's becoming clearer and clearer that despite the company pretending the contrary that the 13 babies left are never going to be free or even survive 10 more years of this. And yet, what can they do? In the space station, they are under constant surveillance, not able to plot or move without reports being sent to hundreds of caretakers, scientists, soldiers, and company managers.
When alien monsters suddenly appears in the research space station and starts to eat anyone they come across, it seems that their ends has gotten a lot closer—unless this is the opportunity to escape they had been waiting for...
