Hassereich
Welcome to Hasse. Keep an eye on your purse, a hand on your blade, and an ear on the ground. This city doesn't have room for a soft heart.
Government
The city is run by the Hassen, the oligarchic council composed of the wealthiest and most powerful families. The constant struggle between the nobles keeps the council's occupants a shifting cast, very little actual governing is accomplished as a result.
Defences
The city's spread out island structure keeps it well defended from most external dangers. Anything that comes close to the city will be subjected to the fury of the powerful navy the docks there.
Infrastructure
The city is actually spread out over several neighboring islands, with the largest being the original city of Hasse. A sophisticated series of ferries keeps the city linked. The smaller cities are governed by the mayors, minor nobles appointed by the Hassen.
History
The original city was established in the 5th century on a large island just off the southern coast of the Meldier Peninsula, by those escaping the constant pressure from the savages of the Traum. The original families became the first Hassen, which lead the city's constantly growing population of refugees. The city flourished under the Hassen, establishing itself as the premier trade center on the continent. It served as the primary gateway for the exotic goods coming from the eastern lands of Mamé, which led to incredible wealth.
In 740 AO, the expanding influence of the Hassen attracted the attention of Alghast, which was coming of a series of successful conquests in the south. The kingdom of Alghast, with the blessing of the High Ossics, declared war on the city-state. The war lasted 8 years, but after a crushing naval defeat for the Hassen, Alghast was able to land her forces in the city. The occupation was relatively bloodless as the Hassen surrendered as soon as the heavily armored boots of the Ossic knights hit the groumd. The Hassen allowed the Ossics to eradicate any competing religions within the city, establishing new temples dedicated to mankind.
