The people of Thienid think their woods are inhabited by wood sprites, dangerous spirits who won't hesitate to kill anyone who dares enter the woods.
Historical Basis
The mythological wood spirits are actually Lenorae, a humanoid species with superhuman abilities that make them terrifying to the average human.
Spread
The "spirits" have been seen numerous times by Thienidians near the outskirts of the woods, and they've spread terrifying rumors that forbid anyone from entering the forests. The rumors have spread across Thienid and Scythia, and both cultures have at least a moderate wariness of forests.
