History of Milana

History of the country of Milana

Feudal Age

400 AF 599 AF

Two hundred years without one dominant ruler. Milana was ruled by a council of constantly-feuding families, each based out of their own keep, everyone considering themself monarch- until the Tormevi family beat everyone else out for the title.

    Terezia's Revolt
    Military action

In which Terezia Tormevi, a next-to-nobody from Swynden, her four daughters, and their allies consolidated and took control of the nation of Milana. Their blended military-and-marriage tactics ensured that the Tormevi Dynasty would last over two hundred years.

Tormevi Dynasty

600 AF 815 AF

The period during which the Tormevi family ruled Milana. This era was the height of Milani power, but it also ended with the nation's ultimate fall.

    Rule of the Four Queens
    Political event

The time between the consolidation of Milana in 600 to the death of Onesta, in 615, when all four daughters of Terezia (and Terezia herself, as regent whenever it was appropriate) held control of the nation. This was a time of relative peace. Terezia was a very forceful woman but few found it in them to hate her, so, unaware that the Tormevis were here to stay, there were few to no uprisings until after Onesta's death.

    King Baudri II
    Political event

    Predecessor: Onesta I
The rule of Baudri II, the first king of Milana, was a tumultuous one. As his mother Onesta I died in labor, his father, aunts, and grandmother all acted as regent for almost half of his reign until he reached majority, and even afterward his father was at his right hand. It was no surprise when, after Baudri Ovresti died in 650, Baudri II Tormevi took to his bed and soon died as well- of grief.
    Successor: Baudri III Tormevi

    Predecessor: Baudri II
It's hard to imagine the Tormevi dynasty as a successful era in Milani history without the rule of Baudri III- not because of his own actions, necessarily, but because of his mother's influence. The nation of Lashaar was not large at this time but it did hold a great deal of power over its neighbors, and Baudri's mother- being a princess of Lyn Iddal- managed just that with her son. Lucky for Milana, the benefits of a close connection with Lashaar were received sans drawbacks, and after the death of Baudri III his wife Asha and daughters, Keira and Onesta, regained continental independence.

    Political event

    Predecessor: Baudri III
Keira ascended the throne at the age of eight and, for the length of her 54-year reign, she never lost the headstrong, childlike attitude. They called her Keira the Lucky, not because she had a lot of luck personally but because she was just what Milana needed: a ruler capable of making new alliances and maintaining the individuality of the nation. After thirty-eight years of risky partnership with Lyn Iddal, Keira managed to diplomatically sever ties and solidify a new relationship with Iona. Marrying her third cousin (who also happened to be her aunt's much-younger brother in law) may have been pushing it on the genetics of the family, but no one really cared and most people were just relieved that Lashaar was back where it belonged.

Asha and her mother, Keira I, were smart. Not only did both of them make fantastic marriage alliances but they stabilized the country to the point where, for four generations, Milana enjoyed a golden age. Life lesson: Marry an Atrinya. Unless you're already an Atrinya. Then it's a bad idea on so many levels.

    King Jochem I
    Political event

    Predecessor: Asha I

Jochem, like most other men in the Royal House of Tormevi, did not live long. King for a mere three months, he spent half his reign in the far west of the realm in the hopes of expansion. Unfortunately, the west of the realm is mostly made up of swamps and the beginnings of mountains, and he caught marsh fever. His nine-year-old daughter succeeded him under the regency of his wife.

    Queen Vevra I ("The Great")
    Political event

    Predecessor: Jochem I

Before Vevra, no Milani ruler had had more than two children. With low mortality rates and no primogeniture to inherit, there was more issue when the nursery was full than when it wasn't. Vevra, however, knew that she wanted a big family and went for it anyway. Five kids. Doesn't sound like a big deal, but for a royal family it was. And lucky for them, only one child displayed any interest in ruling anyway- Agnes.

    Predecessor: Vevra I "The Great"

The fall of Milana wasn't Agnes's fault. The Tormevi family had played their cards right. They were in the middle of a golden age, everyone was happy with the current politics, and very little indicated anything would- or even could- go wrong. Agnes's first child, Baudri, was happy governing Lolinglas, her second, Vevra, was smitten with her husband and even more in love with his estates in Byfox, and the youngest- Kiernen- was taking after her mother in every way, and had just married the crown prince of Iona when things went south.

      Successor: Kiernen I

The Cleansing of the House of Tormevi
    Military action

The murder of the royal family has got to mean something in the grand scheme of things. Except for Kiernen Tormevi, who had just married Forde Ovresti and was honeymooning with him in Merriford, celebrating the end of the conflict (ha), every non-Lolingli, living member of the Royal House was assassinated over a period of four months.   As soon as Kieren learned what had happened, she ran.

    Military action

In which the remainder of the old ruling families of Milana were massacred. Only Callista Nazenne and those living in Lolinglas survived.
