History of the Nornurii

Nornurii are a variant ethnic subgroup of humans. Over the years they developed that much, that only a few similarities between them and 'standard' humans remain.

    Diplomatic action

With time, the humans adapt to the rather rough circumstances, focussing on fishing rather than farming. With the discovery of mineral resources in the mountains, they quickly get to crank up local and global trading. The civilization grows and propers rather rapidly and even manages to put up its own army. With the threat of the giants constantly lingering further up in the north, diplomats decide to negotiate peace treaties and non-aggression pacts with them. To everyone's surprise, the giants agree to peacefully co-exist, resulting in further approaches to each other, i.e. cultural and religious mixing.

    The ice-coast division
    Military action

It was not an easy task for the forces of the Human Empire to reconquer the north of Ephea. Due to the tight bond between giants and Nornurii, the humans were unable to pass the mountain ranges. The only way to get to the territory of the Nornurii was to cross the sea. The Nornurii being a defensive coastal nation was prepared to defend the coasts with a strong navy and even stronger fortifications. Despite the lack of advanced technology, the soldiers of the Nornurii called the ice-coast division were able to fortify and defend their positions. The fighters of the Nornurii were known for their giant-like strength, many of them experienced in the arts of nature and ice magic.

That way, the Empire finally managed to invade the territory on Yaldin 7th 6430 b. BF. This day went down in history as the day of 'Melting the ice'. But this day was only the beginning of the end of the war. The garrisons and fortifications of the Nornurii stood strong as before and it was a hard task for the Empire to reinforce the landing parties with the ice-coast division still defending the waters.

Being deprived of the main source for food and getting cut off from the most important trading routes, the Nornurii had to focus on hunting, but after years of siege, the population of wild animals decreased too quickly. The officiating ruler, queen Jennifer, the last heir of the bloodline of King Tuborg, therefore, made a dark deal with the witch from the wooden shack. In exchange for fertile lands, she had to give up on her own fertility until reaching the age of 40. This was a major concern for the young queen, having no heir for her throne yet. But the witch demanded another condition. Queen Jennifer had to keep her virginity up to her 40th year or lose her fertility completely. Taking the risk and potentially sacrificing the persistence of her bloodline, she agreed to that deal and saved the Nornurii from starving.

    Exploring the north
    Expedition

Despite their defensive, reserved lifestyle, the Nornurii did not lack to have a global influence on the world of Alendia. With the Empire in the south, dwarves and giants in the west, and elves in the east, there was only the wide-open sea in the north, which remained unexplored and untouched. King Erik decided to send multiple ships and expeditions to the north, discovering multiple smaller islands, most of them icy and frozen without any creatures or plants living on them. The expeditions lasted for multiple years and decades, providing a better image of the world outside of the borders of the new world of Alendia until eventually a significant discovery was made.

    Discovery of the Archfoe
    Discovery, Exploration

On 16th Phex 5713 b. Bf, a long time before the Empire gets to explore the old world of Alendia, the crew of the ship Aurora makes a discovery far up in the north beyond the borders of the new world of Alendia. On a small island, named the island of the beginning, the Nornurii find something, which remained to be secret. It is one of the biggest secrets in the whole world of Alendia and the Nornurii don't share a thing about this discovery. After reporting that case to King Erik, a new squad is founded. The most persistent, experienced, strongest, and mightiest soldiers and warriors are bundled into a troop, called Guardians of the Storm. Because of the king's reaction, the discovery is often seen as a terrible threat by everyone who doesn't know anything further about it. Over the years the discovery was believed to be 'The Archfoe'.
