Withdrawing more and more forces from the war against the elves, they quickly lost territories and control over the Pale Tree. The griffon destroyed all twelve cities of Ariil, which resulted in an enormous overload of energy and a massive explosion. A big landmass of eastern Durarin was completely destroyed, along with a lot of cities, villages around the Mahlstrom and thousands of lives. The explosion created the Dragon-Island, which the griffon used as a hide-out. Only many years later, a mighty wizard managed to defeat the creature and freed the darkelves from it's curse.

    The Discovery of the Skuttles
    Discovery, Exploration

The darkelves started to overpopulate due to the regulations of the matriarchy. Since they were unable to conquer more territory in the positional war against the elves, the darkelves were forced to increase the city capacity and living space. Due to the lack of superior architecture, it was impossible to build incredibly high buildings. Instead, they started to build houses below the underground, creating artificial cave systems below major cities. In 14664 b BF they discovered a race which hasn't been seen before in Alendia. Swarms of rat-like creatures, called Skuttles living in huge caves and undercities right below Durarin. Because of their lack of intelligence, technology and leadership, it was an easy task for the darkelves to fight and enslave the Skuttles. It turned out they were outstanding architects when it comes to cave systems and undercities and so the darkelves made them build a giant network of underground caves and tunnels, known as the Underdark.

    Transformation of War
    Military action

In 14632 b. BF, the Drow more or less retreated from the war front and stopped attacking the reinforced fortresses of the elves. Instead, they shifted their technique, transforming the war into a guerilla-like conflict, involving unconventional methods. The Drow focussed on attacking unprotected which were considered sacred or forbidden. The attack on Lauden's Oracle made the first step of this transformation. In the following years, the Drow attempted similar things with rather small success. Even attacks through the Underdark didn't bring the expected results.
