IWAs

IWAs, or Independently Working Automatons, are sentient robotfolk that have inhabited Aldyn for almost five hundred years. They are much more recent additions to the system than many other races, but have stopped new construction in more recent years following concerns of potential sentience.

Servant Race

The IWAs serve as robotic servants, doing all sorts of things in society. They are found everywhere, resembling every race and made to perform menial tasks the upper class doesn’t want to worry about. They have over the last 500 years been expanded in their logic to such a point they are almost entirely functional as a sentient, with true emotions and thoughts, even if the upper class refuses to believe it. Most people in Aldyn's planets only see IWAs rarely, but they are exceptionally common (and very opressed) on almost every satelite in the system and one of the most common races for larger flight crews on space ships.   IWAs serve in part due to their strong morals and feelings of being needed, but there has long been fear of a robot uprising which seems doomed to happen. Since IWAs rely on human charging to keep them alive, and are forced to work in horrible conditions. Many serve forced servitude due to their need for charging stations and are treated as much less than anyone else in society. The vast majority of IWAs do not have any rights given by the government and are effectively forced to move between servitude positions. There are rumors of an organization and diety known as the Ghost in the Machine working to bring them together and start the revolution and several rogue Artificial Intelligence outbreaks have tried to save the IWAs, seeing them as part of their own kind.

Created Morality

IWAs are part of a huge number of controversial experiments and studies. What does it mean to be sentient? At what point does the combination of elements from sentient creators make the creation worth as much as the creator? What would it mean to have reproducing robots who can forge themselves? Safeguards are currently in their programming to prevent the potential of their own replication, but there's many arguments on the immorality of this safeguard.

DND Mechanics

Much of the abilities of the IWA borrow from KibblesTasty's Warforged race, linked here. Some changes were made, but much of the language comes from that document.
  • Ability Score Increase. Your Constitution score increase by 1, and another score of your choice increases by 2.
  • Age. An IWA does not age, but with the passage of time their body may become increasingly worn. With proper maintenance, An IWA lives indefinitely, though few get the chance.
  • Alignment. An IWA tends toward a Lawful disposition, but it is not an inviolable rule. While almost all IWAs will retain some semblance of the order and discipline they were created with, a small fraction will intentionally discard this behavior and become Chaotic. The vast majority have good alignments, seemingly regardless of the alignment of their creators.
  • Size. Your size is medium. Most IWAs stand between 5 and 6 1/2 feet tall. Their build can vary based on their purpose.
  • Speed. Your base walking speed is 30 feet.
  • Construct Nature. Your constructed nature proves resistant to certain afflictions. You have advantage on saving throws against being poisoned, and you have resistance to poison damage. You are immune to disease. You don't need to eat, drink or breathe. You don't need to sleep, and magic can't put you to sleep.
  • Sentry's Rest. When you take a long rest, you must spend at least six hours in an inactive, motionless state, rather than sleeping. In this state, you appear inert, but it doesn't render you unconscious, and you can see and hear as normal.
  • Language. You can speak, read, and write Common.
  • Modular Function. IWAs do not get subraces like most standard races, but instead get modular abilities. You can pick one and get a choice of a second at level 5.

Artificial Intellect

You were built knowing certain things. You gain two skill proficiencies of your choice and one language of your choice.   Taking this ability a second time gives another skill proficiency and one skill expertise of your choice as well as one more language of your choice.

Durable Nature

You gain a +1 bonus to Armor Class.   Taking this ability a second time gives you another +1 armor while not holding a weapon in your second hand.

Hazardous Environment Adaption.

You were built to operate where weaker creatures couldn't. You gain resistance to one of the follow of your choice: acid, cold, fire, lightning, thunder.

Integrated Tool

You have one built in tool or weapon. Choose between thieves' tools, navigator's tools, any artisan's tools, or any one-handed melee weapon. This tool or weapon is integrated into your body. You gain proficiency with the tool or weapon. You must have a free hand to use the tool or weapon.

Integrated Tech-magic

Your purpose required minor technological magic. You know one cantrip of your choice from the Wizard spell list. Intelligence is your Spellcasting Ability for it. This cantrip appears to be mechanical in nature when used.   Taking this ability a second time gives a first level spell which can be used your proficiency bonus number of times per long rest.

Powerful Build

You were built for heavy lifting and manual labor. You count as one size larger when determining your carrying capacity and the weight you can push, drag, or lift.   This ability cannot be taken a second time.

Swift Repairs

You were built with a modular, easily repairable design. When you roll to regain hit points with hit dice, you can roll two dice and take the higher value.   This ability cannot be taken a second time.

Streamlined Functionality

Equipping weapons or donning/doffing armor can be done as a bonus action. Additionally, your movement speed is increased by 5.   Once per long rest, you can add 3 to your AC as a reaction, potentially avoiding an attack.   This ability cannot be taken a second time.
