Culture
Due to their long history of being invaded, a significant portion of the people of Cadwalader are usually distrusting of outsiders, sometimes bordering on xenophobic. The exception to this is the large halfling community living there. The halflings tend to live in their own isolated communities, but treat their human neighbours with trust and kindness, leading to excellent relations between them. Additionally, the younger generations are becoming more open to foreign ideas and people (more on this later).
The current nation exists as a republic (one of the first of its kind), with a Prime Minister being elected every 5 years. Representatives are chosen from the human and halfling communities, and they vote on laws to be passed. Since democracy is fairly new to the nation, there is currently no party system in place and representatives vote purely out of interest for them and their people. The current Prime Minister is a halfling named Falmor Twofold, who is well-respected among the people.
Due to the regular invasions from their south-eastern neighbours, much of the Cadwaladen language and culture is similar to that of Vulkan, while stubbornly retaining much of its ancient identity. Despite many attempts by the Vulkans, (insert vulkan religion here) has yet to become popular due to long-standing hatred towards Vulkan and Viking culture. Instead, most people follow ancient pagan customs (especially the halflings, as they live longer and so traditions are less likely to be lost), with druids acting as religious figures similar to priests. In recent times however, the human population has been moving towards total atheism, with the halflings soon to follow, and the government has already repealed any religiously motivated legislation, making it an officially secular state. There has been a divide within the human population for several centuries regarding attitudes to other nations, as some are open to other cultural influences while others remain trapped in the past. The more liberal thinkers used to be a rarity under the old monarchy, but now the country is a republic, freedom of expression and open borders are more valued (think golden age Weimar Germany).
The influence of invaders in Cadwalader goes beyond language and religion, as the country is known for its culinary diversity thanks to immigrants from Vulkan, Voxek and Caliban (now the Federation of Voidvale) bringing in new ingredients and cooking methods. The Cooks' Guild has great influence, both politically and culturally, and many come to the nation for an apprenticeship there. Indeed, it is very difficult to open a restaurant anywhere on the continent without a Guild qualification. Painting, music, sculpture, literature and other forms of art have also seen a boom in recent times under the Twofold government (i just realised his name makes a good metaphor for the population divide this was totally planned i promise), leading to what many consider a cultural golden age.
