The Demon Lords

The Demon Lords are a circle of demonic fiends recognized as leaders and/or the most powerful of their kind. Demons consume and flay souls to construct more of their own kind, each Demon reflective of the kind of suffering they endured mixed with the indulgence that they reveled in during their lives. These entities reflect the strongest representation of these portfolios.

Structure

  • Lamashtu, the Mother of Monsters: The Queen of Demons, monsters, and the unwanted and lost, depicted as a pregnant, jackal-headed woman with black feathered wings and a serpent's head for a tail. Rules over all abyssal demons but wars with the other lords for control, and was betrayed by Pazuzu during her rise to power. Was a mortal who was cursed to always feel the pain of bearing a child but never give birth, which followed her to the grave and the hells.
  • Baphomet, the Horned King: The Demon Lord of beasts, giants, and horned creatures, primarily giants and minotaurs as he appears like a mixture of both. Swore fealty to Lamashtu and serves her as a lieutenant after being defeated by her in open combat. Feuds with Yeenoghu frequently.
  • Yeenoghu, the Sovereign of Savagery: The Demon Lord of beasts, hounds, and fanged creatures such as Gnolls, appearing as a giant grey one with glowing eyes and mouth, wielding a three-headed flail. Swore fealty to Lamashtu and serves her as a lieutenant after being hunted down and captured. Feuds with Baphomet frequently.
  • Orcus, the Lord of Undeath: The God and Demon Lord of undeath, necromancy, and dark wizardry, originally the one to develop the dark school of necromancy and being put to the sword for his crimes as a mortal. He fostered his gift and eventually rose to become a demon lord and then a god, due to the pervasive use of his arcane developments. Depicted as a rotund man wearing robes and a ram-skull headpiece that some confuse to be his head, having cloven feet and bat-like wings. He wields his wand formed of a giant skull, used as both a casting focus and as a great mace. Holds hatred for Vecna as another competing god of necromancy.
  • Graz'zt, the Lord of Lust: The Demon lord of lust, beauty, and manipulation, depicted as a nine-foot-tall handsome man with obsidian skin, green eyes, a crown of horns, and tattoos over most of his body. He wields an acid-dripping sword and has been known to seduce many heroes to his side, having once been an Archdevil but choosing the path of the demon as all of Hell worked simply to serve Asmodeus, and not himself.
  • The Juiblex, the Faceless Lord: The Demon Lord of oozes, consumption, and gluttony, father of all ooze in the world and an alien creature in mind and body. Originated from the Far Realm before making its way into the Abyss, seeking to consume the whole of the world with its vast knowledge and understanding.
  • The Demogorgon, the First Demon: Believed to be the first Demon making him a Lord by both power and seniority. Has two heads and two personalities, often wandering the realms with an entourage of ravaging demons causing mayhem wherever he went. Both heads have names, Amaeul the cunning and charismatic who wished to be separated, and Hethradiah the brutal who yearned to stay attached. He often experiments with new ways of torture and manipulation and is depicted as having two heads of baboons, one body, and a pair of tentacles for arms with a spiked tail.
  • Abraxas, the Lord of the Last Word: The Demon Lord of lore, magic, and forbidden knowledge, a patron of wizards who wish to not be limited by the whims and laws of others. Depicted as a man with a finned bird head and a pair of serpents for legs, wielding an arcane shield and whip-like flail that turns into a snake. Patron of snakes and the wisdom they speak is said to be aligned with the Cloaked Serpent as an advisor and or magical provider/practitioner. Often sought for his wisdom by devils, demons, and mortals alike.
  • Malcanthet, the Queen of Desire: Demon lord of lust, desire, and queen of the succubi, acting as a liaison and meeting partner with almost all of the demon lords as they all desire her power and her herself. Often contacted as a go-between for truces, alliances, or threats.
  • Zura, the First Vampire: Demon lord of vampires, cannibalism, and survival, worshiped more often than not by cannibal tribes or vampiric lineages. Appears as a pale woman with black hair and black robes, but has her other form of a fusion of bat and woman with arms for wings and a bestial look. Made a deal with one of the Vestiges, remnants of the Dark Gods that existed long ago before the gods, as she was trapped within the tunnels of the Underdark and forced to eat her companions and then those she came across until she clawed her way to the surface.
  • Dagon, the Shadow of the Sea: Demon lord of the sea, aquatic creatures, occult knowledge, and a patron of aberrations. Appears as a mixture of shark and octopus with human hands and numerous heads, sometimes prayed to by sea-faring folk who wish to survive their journeys.
  • Aldinach, The Skulker in the Sands: Demon lord of deserts, heat, scorpions, beasts with poisonous venom, and thirst, depicted as a large scorpion in thousands of its own kind with the head of a woman. Aligned with Lamashtu after being cast from her own home in the desert, adopted as a daughter.
  • Zuggtmoy, the Rotting Queen: Demon lord of fungai, parasites, poison, decay, and invasion, depicted as a large humanoid fungal form with a woman's face. Seeks to consume, control, and invade everything much like the Juiblex.
  • Areshkagal, The Faceless Sphinx: Demon lord of portals, riddles, confusion, and chance. The younger sister of Aldinach who refuses to align with her or Lamashtu for her betrayal and refusal to return to their home in the desert. Depicted as a blue sphinx with no face, draconic wings, and a viper for a tail through which she speaks. Often said to guard tombs and desert ruins in hopes of earning back the loyalty of her home.
  • Kost, the Deathless Frost: Demon lord of cold and giants, was born as a mortal but disfigured and disdained by all those around him, until he was adopted by an ancient witch who taught him the ways of dark magic and necromancy, using it to bolster one's life force rather than command the dead. He conducted a ritual that infused his soul into a gem-laden torc, and became a giant lich that now resides within the realm of the Abyss as a demon.
