Entangle

By means of this spell, the caster is able to cause plants in the area of effect to entangle creatures within the area. The grasses, weeds, bushes, and even trees wrap, twist, and entwine about the creatures, holding them fast for the duration of the spell.

The full effect of the entangle is determined by the amount and positioning of vegetation present in the area, as follows:

  • If there is little to no natural vegetation but access to unrestrained soil, those entwined will have their movement rate reduced to zero, but may still fight, given their action does not require movement to a new location
  • If there is significant undergrowth but sparse trees, the victim will lose movement (as above) and reduce their attacks to 1 (no affect if they only had 1 attack)
  • If there is significant undergrowth and low hanging trees present, the victim losses their movement and all attacks
  • If there are only low hanging trees, the character may attack or move, but not both (they spend the round fighting off tree limbs and such)

Any creature entering the area is subject to these effects.

A creature that rolls a successful saving throw vs. spell may ignore the effects above but can only move 10 feet per round until out of the area.

Exceptionally large (gargantuan) or strong creatures, or creatures with significant Hit Dice (rule of thumb being 4+) may suffer little or no distress from this spell, at the DM's option, based on the strength of the entangling plants.
