Shield of the King
The Shield of the King is a holy knightly order, charged with the protection of the King. Consisting of around 100 knights, 16 are always near the king.
All have had a geas put upon them, such that they cannot betray the king, They are also all equipped with the finest weapons and armour money can buy, and magical items that make it tough to corrupt them.
At any time, 8 of the kings bodyguards are sparked human fighters, trained by the Order for this task. 2 are elven bladesingers, and 2 are dwarven defenders. The last 4 are generally humans, but do not have to be fighters, with a wizard or cleric often in the party.
A smaller detachment, typically 4-8 soldiers, will accompany the heir apparent, and the rest of the soldiers on duty will simply be around the palace, ensuring safety for the royal household. Most of the other royal palaces have their own protection details, but they are smaller, and a travelling party of around 30 knights will accompany the king when he travels.
