Silver Falls

Written by Rhysthewizard

Silver Falls Tavern   In the heart of the snowcapped mountain range known as the Titan's Cage is a mining town called Silver Falls. The towns namesake is a brilliant curtain of silver water that pours from the mountainside, pooling into a silvery mirror below.   Built around these silvery waters is a tavern made of ancient reddened wood and stone. The tavern is a multi level building with a sloped slate roof. A moon shaped entrance is built in to its northernmost point to allow the water to freely flow.   Inside the tavern features the ambient sounds of crashing falls with sounds mellowed through unknown means, and the lively music of "Two and a Half Elves" a half-elf band comprised of five members.   Curved staircases lead to a landing containing rooms on the far side, and tables with a stunning view toward the center.   The first floor contains a red wooden bar manned by Patrika Skydotter; a Dark haired elven woman with a crooked smile, and a taste for wine.
"> Notable NPC's Felbran- a middle aged Half-Orc with a habit of collecting fine things, and with terrible luck. Felbran always seems to have a dour demeanor and will loudly complain to anyone who will listen about every aspect of his life.   DC 20 History- Felbran won the Tavern after cheating the previous owner in a game of Three Dragon Ante. The owner turned out to be an avatar of Tymora herself, and cursed Felbran with an inability to lie or cheat, and perhaps worse to never imbibe Alcohol again.   DC 15 History- Felbran's only joy in life is drinking Shineberry wine. Note: Shineberry Wine contains alcohol, and thus Felbran's normally sour demeanor can be made worse by offering him some or drinking it in front of him.   Patrika Skydotter- is the longtime elven bartender of the establishment. She tends to perform simple illusions when mixing drinks.   DC 15 History- She has a history of breaking hearts, and prefers a good meal over a date any day.   DC 12 Perception- Her raven hair, and heavier frame compared to the average Elf tend to draw the attention of men and women alike.   Prices   Meals Copper pancakes: A local delicacy. Copper pancakes are a dozen copper coin sized pancakes drizzled in sweet molasses, and a small handful of Shineberry. Cost: 2 copper.   Quail and Shineberry jam: A Qual leg and thigh fried to perfection with a sweet drizzle of house made Shineberry jam on the side. Cost: 4 copper   Lucky Mushrooms and potatoes: Sliced thick these locally sourced potatoes and mushrooms are cut thick breaded and fried. Served with a savory egg based dressing. Cost: 2 copper   Drinks- The tavern has access to spirits from all over, but its main draw is the locally made Shineberry wine. Shineberry Wine- 6 silver per bottle. Each bottle fills 6 glasses.   Description- Shineberry Wine is bottled locally using glass forged in the town of Silver Falls. For the most part it tastes like most other wines made from mixed berries however, some say that Shineberry Wine tastes particularly radiant.   Other Drinks range in price by rarity and strength, but nothing exceeds 6 silver.   Lycanthropes and the wine- Any Lycanthrope or Fiend drinking Shineberry Wine must make a DC 12 CON save or be poisoned for one hour.   DC 12 History- Shineberry Wine is grown from mixed berries grown using water drawn from the silver waterfall. Its a local specialty, and sparkles silver even without a light source. Detect Magic- Both the wine and waterfall shimmer with Transmutation magic.   Adventure Hook   If the players question the nature of the water, and would like to explore a bit they can ask around the tavern for further information. The Miners and Bartender don't know much about how it exists or why its magic, but the rumors say that a shrine to Tymora exists somewhere beyond the falls.   DC 15 Investigation check reveals that the source of the waterfall is a cavern formed into the face of the mountainside.   DC 12 Perception/Investigation reveals that the in the depths of the silver pool partially hidden by the spray of the falls is a cave mouth. The cave mouth seems to lead into the heart of the mountain itself.   The party if interested can use either avenue to investigate the source of the falls further. For the checks below choose reasonable DC's based on the party level.   Climbing- The mountainside is a sheer 90ft with limited handholds. Even after a treacherous climb the players must then hold onto the smooth wet ledge behind the waterfall and pull themselves up. it's suggested to do three checks: Two athletics and an acrobatics check. If the players fall an athletics check they can perform a DEX save to keep their hold or catch themselves. If they fail that as well describe their rapid descent into the pool of water, and have them take 2d4 bludgeoning damage. When they recover the face of Felbran apathetically drinking tea from a stein is the first thing they see.   Diving- Attempting to swim below the crashing falls is a dangerous prospect. The falls and cave create currents that endanger any adventurer attempting to brave the depths. It's suggested to use 3 checks: Two athletics and a constitution check in between while the characters struggle to keep their breath held. If the players fail an athletics check they get swept up in the current, and need to make a DEX save or take 2d4 bludgeoning damage as they are slammed against the cave walls.   The reward- Inside the mountain and beyond the falls is a domed silver cavern holding the silvered corpse of an acient dragon. DC 18 nature to determine its type and age. The dragon sparkles with a silver sheen and is massive in size dwarfing the characters. Perfectly preserved with a look of terror on its face it lies on its back and stares at the stones above. A steady stream of clear water flows onto the corpse partially obscuring the weapon that ended it: A silver Estoc called Karmic Retribution. The estoc has a Red pommel with a silver coin emblazoned on its guard. DC 12 Religion- The Coin is a holy symbol for Tymora Goddess of Luck. With an Athletics Check DC 20 you can free the blade from the impromptu sheath. A prayer to Tymora grants advantage, and a follower of Tymora freely draws the blade.     Karmic Retribution- This +2 Estoc is a finesse weapon with a 5ft range. It deals 1d10 piercing damage on hit, and deals an additional 2d6 radiant damage. Any foe defeated with a critical hit (Natural 20) will turn into pure silver. Any weapon created by this silver counts as magical for the purposes of overcoming damage reduction.
">   Freeing the blade from its rest ends the magical silver effect that permeates the falls in 3D4 weeks and awakens the ancient dragon known is Illmas the Gluttonous. Illmas wakes up in a blind rage and will attack anything it sees in the space. Due to the silver covering the cavern and the dragons long slumber it has a 1d4 chance to miss each attack instead destroying a portion of the cavern. After dealting half of the dragons hit point total it will calm out of its rage and assess the players. The players can try bargaining with it. The dragon is vein and capricious but can be bribed or tricked. If the players continue to fight it the dragon will no longer have the 1d4 miss chance as it has its wits about it.   DC 15 religion check and knowledge of Felbran's curse required. If both are met see "Special" below.   Special: With Karmic Retribution; Felbran may finally be free of his curse. While wielding karmic retribution a character can hold the blade aloft within five feet of Felbran and pray for Tymora's divine blessing. If a character does this: "A ribbon of silver light flows from the sky to the blade. A gust of wind begins to flow around the character, and as if by instinct they begin to chant ancient words lost to time. The blade absorbs the light and the character slashes above Felbran as if cutting the strings that bind him. Felbran glows with that same silver light before an audible cracking sound flows through the tavern. Felbran falls to his knees with tears streaming from his eyes the winds die down, and the light fades."   If the party decides to remove the curse Felbran is no longer bound to the tavern, and no longer forced to abstain from alcohol. At this point he will offer the character whom freed him of his curse the deed to the tavern. This is with the caveat that he is allowed to drink there for free should he choose to come back.

First things first. "Two and a Half Elves" is a brilliant band name. The tavern feels right at home in a campaign town. Perhaps use new headings for the NPC section and the Adventurer Hooks section.   Is Shineberry Wine not alcoholic? Or is it an exception to Felbran's Curse? Can a party help Felbran lift the curse?   Good job considering when the challenge started and how quickly you got this out. If you get a chance to add art, for the characters mentioned, the tavern, or Karmic Retribution I think you should do so.

Feel free to stop by some of my WorldEmber articles if you want. My favorites are The Book of the Unquiet Dead, Outpost of the Moons, and The Emerald Hills. Feedback is always appreciated.

Thank you for the compliments :D I'm very happy you like it! In regards to Shineberry Wine and Felbran; I thought it would be funny if the players decided to try and get on his good side with his favorite wine only to have the opposite effect. The wine is very alcoholic, and the poor man can't even touch a drop. I updated it, and if I can get the art ready before the deadline I definitely will! I've been writing a campaign, and I used the challenge as a reason to design something I'd enjoy as a player :).

Appreciate the DnD breakdown on the location. I could definitely see someone expand on the town/NPCs to stretch this over a couple game nights. Barring that, this still works as a neat side quest.   All in all, solid work!   ------------------------------------------------------------   Feel free to check out my Tavern Challenge article if you want to see what I am up to! I particularly enjoyed the scenery of the silver falls. Very nice view <3 I did find a spelling error here: "...game if Three Dragon Ante.” I'm pretty sure you mean "of". I also enjoyed to use of prose in this article. <3

I enjoy the flavoring of the sword and the construction of this article as an adventure to pull off for a GM! I think the article would need desperatedly to have a map of some sort/a sidebar with more information of the NPC's or the history of the location.

Not quite sure how to add a sidebar, but a map has been added :) thanks for the feedback!
