The Vigilant (of Saint Alessia)
The Vigilant of Saint Alessia is an organization largely operated by clerics and paladins, and other religious followers like priests and monks, who serve in the name of Ellinor, the goddess of life, and is generally equated and recognized as the 'good god' or the 'uncountable' for her pure heart and only interest being protecting life that is pure and just. The organization was officially founded in the year 3,402 when the priestess known as Alessia, a dedicated servant to Ellinor, brought together a close and trusted group of followers in dedicated service to Ellinor. This eventually grew to a widespread organization that saw servants of Ellinor associated with the organization/church across Thirewyn. Although it should be noted many dedicated followers to the gods existed as far back as history as we know it itself, the Vigilant became one of the first well recognized of its kind. Alessia was a half elf female and lived in ____, but found herself traveling often, spreading the word of the goddess she was devoted to and committed many to her cause and teachings over her life. She died in the year 3,502, a hundred years after her life's work officially began, in a field outside of ____. She and her followers were sent there to pray to the goddess and hear her teachings, and they remained there for several months, with Alessia's health failing due to age. It was decided one way or another that the land in which she died would become a shrine to the goddess herself, and in turn all of those who heard her call and dedicated their life in service. Over the years a temple was built and enshrined to the goddess, and her followers. The area surrounding the temple is mostly wilderness, and the closest establishment is ____, a few days travel away. The church has in the years since become a widespread establishment, and many major cities in which have temples or shrines to the gods have a separate church just for Ellinor and the Vigilant, although not nearly as grand as the temple dedicated to Alessia in the Barrens. While the organization is predominantly women, both men and women, of all civilized races, have been involved in the Vigilant at nearly every level of its internal society. Notable Vigilant members include ______ and Josaline of Andelin, who died in the Barrens on the island of ____ protecting refugees from the area from a nearby orc settlement ravaging the territory in the 3,800s. A shrine remains to this day on the island and is visited by thousands of visitors each year, from local civilians paying their respects to a past stranger who protected their ancestors and home in a time of need, to fellow Vigilant members and others of faith coming to pay their respects to the priestess and asking for guidance, support, or even looking for protection themselves.
