Overview

The Fae language is a mystical, enigmatic tongue, spoken only by the Fae themselves. It has no written form, existing purely in the spoken word, with each utterance carrying immense weight and power. Unlike most other languages, the Fae language revolves around the power of names, and it is deeply tied to their mystical nature and their relationship to the world, the forest, and mortals. At the heart of Fae society, names are sacred and hold immense power, influencing their very essence.

The Fae language is woven into the fabric of the Fae themselves, a reflection of their connection to nature, magic, and the living world around them. The language is intimately bound to identity, and in the Fae worldview, a name is not just a label, but a manifestation of power, both in the present and the future. Every Fae has at least two names:

• Nurnir – The public name, used for everyday interactions and among other beings. This is a name that can be known and spoken by others, though it holds no special power in the eyes of the Fae.
• Purgir – The personal name, often referred to as the True Name. This name is incredibly potent and sacred. The Purgir is reserved for those who share an unbreakable bond with the Fae, such as family, close friends, or lovers. The Fae will never give their Purgir to another unless they trust that person completely.

The Purgir, unlike the Nurnir, holds the Fae’s true power. It is said that a Fae's Purgir can bring forth great strength or destruction, depending on the intentions of the speaker. It can be used to bind the Fae to another's will, harm them, or amplify their abilities beyond their natural limits. Because of this, the Purgir is only shared with those who are trusted implicitly.

Nurnir names are given at birth and are used among the Fae and with others. They are sacred in their own right but are not as potent as the Purgir.
