Dreamkeepers

Overview

Umbris is the enigmatic and silent goddess of the night, the stars that gleam in the darkness, and the dreams that guide the souls of the living. She is the goddess of the unseen, the quiet force that governs the realm of sleep and the subconscious. Born from the union of Adamas, The God of Order and Time and Lilith, Goddess of Darkness and Shadow, Umbris represents the mystery of the night, the comfort of darkness, and the power of dreams. She is a goddess of introspection, change, and reflection, offering solace to those who seek her guidance and protection in the dark hours of the night.

Umbris is revered by the Felidar people, who view her as both a mother and a guide. They believe that she is the one who reveals the beauty and wisdom hidden in the shadows, and through her, they find peace and strength in their own identity. As the goddess of dreams, she is intimately involved in their lives, offering blessings through visions and prophetic dreams. Her followers often believe that their dreams hold the key to understanding their future and their place in the world.

The Felidar see Umbris as a quiet but powerful force—one that does not speak loudly but whose presence is felt deeply in the stillness of the night and the vastness of the stars. She represents both the beauty of silence and the power of hidden truths, which can only be revealed through careful introspection and meditation.

Religious Hierarchy

The religious structure of the Dreamkeepers is largely based on introspection, wisdom, and the interpretation of dreams, with the Dreamkeepers themselves at the core of leadership. The hierarchy is as follows:

  • The Dreamweaver or Archon of Umbris – The highest spiritual leader and interpreter of Umbris’ will. The Dreamweaver is believed to receive the most direct communication from Umbris through dreams and visions and is responsible for interpreting these messages for the people. They guide both the spiritual and practical aspects of the Felidar society, ensuring that the community remains aligned with Umbris’ divine will.
  • Dreamkeepers – A council of revered individuals who have undergone rigorous training in the art of dream interpretation. They are trusted advisors to the Dreamweaver and are responsible for interpreting the dreams of the people. Dreamkeepers are highly respected members of society and often mediate conflicts based on the guidance they receive from Umbris in dreams.
  • Lunar Priests and Priestesses – These are the more accessible spiritual leaders in the Dreamkeeper religion. They lead the Night Vigils and other rituals, facilitating the connection between the followers and Umbris during communal worship. Lunar Priests and Priestesses also assist with personal guidance, helping the Felidar interpret their dreams and make important life decisions.
  • The Dreamseekers – These are younger followers or novices who are still learning the ways of dream interpretation and the rites associated with Umbris’ worship. They assist in rituals, care for sacred spaces, and undergo spiritual training to eventually become Dreamkeepers.

Holidays

The primary holiday of the Dreamkeepers is the Festival of the Shining Night. This grand festival occurs during the height of the starry season, when the night sky is most visible, and the moon shines at its brightest. It is a celebration of Umbris, where the Felidar gather to honor the goddess and the beauty and mystery of the night.

  • Festival of the Shining Night – The festival lasts for several nights and includes music, dancing, and feasts beneath the stars. The highlight of the festival is the ceremonial imbibing of a special mushroom native to the Kingdom of Koilos, which induces vivid dreams and visions that are believed to be sacred messages from Umbris. The Felidar then share their dreams with one another in a communal effort to gain collective wisdom. During this time, the Dreamkeepers interpret the dreams of the participants, offering insights that guide the community for the coming year.
  • Night Vigil – This is a quiet and personal ritual that takes place during the darkest nights of the year, those being on New Moons. Followers remain awake throughout the night in silence, meditating and reflecting on their lives and their connection to Umbris. It is believed that the goddess grants her wisdom most readily during the hours of deepest night, and the Vigil serves as a time to receive her guidance. Dreamcatchers and star-like crystals are often used during these vigils, which are set up in sacred spaces within homes or at temples dedicated to Umbris.

Political and Cultural Influence

The Dreamkeepers hold significant cultural influence within the Felidar society. Their wisdom and interpretations of dreams are sought after by all members of the tribe, and their guidance often plays a central role in both personal and political decision-making. The quiet nature of their religion, however, does not lend itself to direct involvement in politics, but their indirect influence is profound.

  • Cultural Influence:
The Felidar people have a deep cultural connection to the night and dreams, and their entire way of life is shaped by the quiet introspection and reflection encouraged by their worship of Umbris. Art, music, and storytelling often revolve around the themes of the stars, dreams, and the mysteries of the universe. The Felidar are known for their grace and elegance, which they believe are gifts from Umbris herself, and this is reflected in their refined culture.
  • Political Influence:
Though the Dreamkeepers do not directly rule over the Felidar, their influence is undeniable in political matters. Leaders often consult with Dreamkeepers before making significant decisions, especially those that impact the future of the tribe. The Dreamweaver, as the highest spiritual authority, may offer subtle guidance to political leaders, advising them on the best course of action based on the dreams and visions that have been received by the Dreamkeepers. This indirect form of influence ensures that the Felidar remain aligned with the divine will of Umbris.
