Session 7: Infiltrating the Camp Report

General Summary

After much deliberation, the party decides to split up in order to infiltrate the camp. Jawn and Egan, dressed in black cultist garb, decide to walk right into the camp to try to find Egan's mentor Leosin. Nutmeg and Uthal, being rather more conspicuous, follow their progress along the top of the ridge.   Jawn and Egan make their way over to the prisoner area, following the rather questionable directions from their fairy companion. They find the prisoners' tent, where the prisoners are all passed out and tied to a stake in the middle. Leosin is not among them, however, so the pair moves on.   Uthal, in the meantime, discovers a couple of cooking fires right at the edge of the cliff, and decides to nab one of the roasts by lowering a slip-knot.   After seeing a cultist walk into the main tent with a "report for Mondath," Jawn and Egan discussed the possibility of walking in with the same excuse to see inside. After dismissing it as a reckless idea, they decided to sneak around the back of the tent to listen in away from the guards. On their way, though, they spot Leosin trussed up in chains bolted to the cliff face nearby.   They quickly hurry over to examine him, and find that he is in terrible shape, having been battered and tortured. They signal to Nutmeg and Uthal, and Uthal begins lowering the rope while Nutmeg flutters down the cliff. Leosin recognizes Egan, but protests when they try to free him, insisting that there is more he needs to learn before he escapes. The party isn't particularly convinced, but after a guard notices them and warns them to leave (still convinced that they're just cultists and not strangers), they decide to pull back. Jawn convinces Egan to return to the rest of the party, where they can discuss their next move.   They climb back up the cliff with Uthal's help, where the party decides to send Nutmeg down again to heal him and learn what he knows, and see whether it's worth it for him to stay. She descends and gives him some healing, then asks him a few questions, including how many raiders there are, why they're ransacking the countryside, who is leading them, and where they plan to strike next. He's able to answer all except the last, and hints that something important is going on in the cave behind the tent, which is where all the treasure is going.   She returns to the rest of the party and relays the answers in fairy fashion, and the party decides to let him go another round since he seems up to it (much to the chagrin of Egan). They maintain watch through the night, gaining a long rest and consuming rations (except for Uthal, who had eaten the roast).   However, as dawn approached, the party began to consider the possibility that Leosin might not survive the day, and that they would have to wait all the way until next nightfall to rescue him. They alter the plan, deciding to free him instead, and spend some time trying to figure out how to deal with the guard who'd noticed them before.   Eventually, after many plans were put forth and discarded, they decide to distract the guard, wheel him around, and take him out with a surprise round. They're successful, and quickly unlock Leosin from his bonds. Leosin suggests they have the guard take his place to delay the discovery of his escape, and Nutmeg flies over to the large tent to try to examine the map table they saw by the entrance. Despite nearly being spotted the first time by Rezmir, Nutmeg checks a second time and sees that the map shows places they've hit, but not places they're planning to hit.   They leave and make their way back to Greenest.

Player Contributions

"P Sherman, 42 Wallaby Way, Sydney" Nutmeg says as she air-skips her way along the ridgeline with Uthal, out of sight of the dimming camp, but following the progress of her friends Egan and Jawn. Perhaps one should clarify that Uthal is not air-skipping. Only Nutmeg.   "How many raiders are there?" she asks herself rhetorically, trying to remember the question. She looks down at the camp. "That's easy. More than five."   She hums a little and pauses to inspect a blade of grass. It trembles as Uthal passes and she looses interest. "P Sherman, 42 Wallaby Way, Sydney".   "Why are they ransacking the countryside?" she asks herself from memory. She taps her chin as she floats along Uthal's huge, striding legs. "Hmmmm... Something about silverware and a dragon's hoard. Power from the thingie to thing of something to happen when there's enough." She nods at herself studiously.   "P Sherman, 42 Wallaby Way, Sydney" she repeats almost sing-song, zipping dexterously between Uthal's shins as he takes a long stride.   "Who is leading them?" she asks and very quickly answers. "Oh! I think it's that purple guy and the black dragon ing thing ling tingy. Thing. I saw them in the tent. Maybe I should have asked them their names. I'll do that next time."   "P Sherman, 42 Wallaby Way, Sydney" she says like it's some charm or ritual.   "Where are they planning to strike next?" she ponders. There is a long pause. For which Uthal is probably grateful. But it doesn't last. "Hmmm. No clue." She hums unconcerned.

Rewards Granted

  • How many raiders are there? Between 150 and 200, by Leosin's count. The Cult of the Dragon is in charge, but they make up less than half of the force, which mostly consists of mercenaries and kobolds.
  • Why are they ransacking the countryside? They're gathering treasure as some kind of tribute for Tiamat, whom they are attempting to resurrect. The treasure is being stored in the cave behind the leaders' tent.
  • Who is leading them? Rezmir, a black half-dragon, seems to be in charge, but Frulam Mondath (a mage) runs the day-to-day operations, and Langdedrosa Cyanwrath is her right-hand man, rarely leaving her side.
  • Where are they planning to attack next? That is still unknown. The map Nutmeg perused showed locations where the raiders had hit, but not where they plan to hit.

Missions/Quests Completed

  • The party rescued Leosin.
  • The party discovered the answers to most of Governor Nighthill's questions.
