Session 6: Following the Raiders Report

General Summary

The party, at the behest of Governor Nighthill, set out to follow the raiders to learn the following:

• How many raiders are there?
• Why are they ransacking the countryside?
• Who is leading them?
• Where are they planning to strike next?

They follow the raiders, who have gone south; the raiding party is massive, and their tracks are easy to follow (though not easy to decipher in terms of numbers or kind).
Four hours down the path (at about 6pm), Nutmeg spots campfire smoke in the distance, and as the party approaches, they find a group of stragglers. At first, Uthal and Nutmeg attempt to lure the raiders out onto the road while Egan and Jawn circle around, but the stragglers aren't paying any attention to the road, and the party can hear them arguing with each other over who gets the honor of bringing the treasure into camp. After some quick re-planning, the party decides to heckle the stragglers into fighting each other, then they swoop in to pick off the survivors.
They capture one of the stragglers, one of the mercenaries who broke his hand while attempting to hit Uthal. Hoping for freedom, the straggler explains that the raiders are made up of mercenaries, cultists, and kobolds, and that their camp is 2 hours south of here. He also divulges that the mercenaries get their orders from the cultists, who in turn get their orders from three purple-robed individuals: a blue part-dragon (likely Langdedrosa Cyanwrath), a human, and a black part-dragon, who could possibly be the top leader. For the information, Uthal puts the straggler's hand in a splint and lets him go.
The party arrives at the raiders' camp just as dusk is falling (at about 8pm). They observe from a ridge overlooking the camp, and see that there are guard towers, but the guards aren't checking anyone's identity - nor, it seems, do any of them have any sort of uniform to distinguish themselves. Possibly because they don't expect to be infiltrated.
Nutmeg goes down to scout out the situation, and gets the lay of the land: the tents seem to be grouped, with some (particularly foul-smelling) seem to be kobold tents, some being mercenary tents, some being prisoner tents, and some being cultist tents. The prisoner tents have a handful of villagers watched by purple-clad warriors, but Nutmeg couldn't find anyone matching the description of Leosin Erlanthar. She did, however, notice an unattended backpack, and swiped it (it then shrank due to her racial feature) on the off chance it had clothes in it for party-members to wear.
Past the prisoner tents were the cultist tents, which were closest to the giant tent. From a distance, Nutmeg spotted the human and the part-black-dragon-person walking around inside next to what she thought was a pool table. She then turned around and headed back to report to the others.
The backpack, as it turned out, had two sets of clothes, which would work for Egan and Jawn. Uthal, being rather large and conspicuous (and especially recognizable by Langdedrosa) decides to stay on the ridge and follow the others' progress from there while they look for answers and for Egan's old master.

Rewards Granted

The raiders were bringing back a small sum of treasure from Greenest.
