Lumene Material in Akayun's Worlds | World Anvil

Lumene

Lumene is a substance produced by extracting and enriching the astral fluids from the Liquid Tier of the Astral Sea, mostly produced in the underbelly of Thyra. It is very viscous with an opaque green and purple color, and it twinkles extremely at every angle. Since its discovery/invention in 1020, its significance as a power source for vehicles and industrial systems across the Worlds has only grown, but its production remains immensely dangerous.

The Liquid and Gloomwind Tiers had already been in use for a long time for factories because the astral fluid at normal concentration is able to dampen arcane procedures, preventing them from causing unexpected chain reactions in the case of an accident. Furthermore, it does not dry up or freeze like water, which is already expensive to acquire in mass in the city. All convenient side effects of hiding the industrial labor beneath the Cloudmist away from the eyes of the surface.

The earliest enriched Lumene was produced by an enthusiastic student of the Specterlake School, attempting to create a light source from the slight luminescent properties of astral fluid and gas. In the process of concentrating the energetically strong parts of the fluid, a liquid that responded violently to stimulation of fire and lightning. Soon it was discovered that this enriched fuel could not only be used as a combustible fuel, but also as a source of expendable arcane power.

Lumene is now produced in large rigs worked by laborers in masks to protect them against the unbreathable atmosphere below cloudmist. Constant time spent in unbreathable air and under low safety regulation often leads to breathing disorders and other health complications. Its biproducts can be used in the creation of addictive substances, distributed throughout the underworld by the Gozanal and others. The abundance of lumene in the poorest areas of the city become ripe targets for terrorrism and saboge.
