Bounty Hunter
Career
Qualifications
Anyone can become a self-professed bounty hunter as long as you are willing to hunt down someone for coin. Only once you have actually been paid for a bounty can one truly say they are a bounty hunter.
Payment & Reimbursement
Bounties pay wildly based on who funds the bounty and the nature of the job. A lowly peasant who slept with a noble's wife will pay less than a notoriously dangerous bandit leader.
Other Benefits
If one should become a highly successful bounty hunter, you might gain a certain amount of clout amongst the nobility and underworld alike.
Perception
Purpose
Bounty hunting has been a muddled professions for a couple reasons. First of all is the obvious nature of hunting people. Not all contracts are lethal, but it is far from uncommon to have a "dead or alive" target be killed. This grim nature paints the profession as bloody and that isn't far from the truth. This does create a bestial fear in criminals whenever a bounty hunter is on their trail. This private "law enforcement" is one of the more common ways to deal with criminals in the Wilds.
A far less common role of a bounty hunter is the "monster hunter." Such individuals have made traversing the wilds a part of their live and are often sent to exterminate one of the strange creatures terrifying a region.
Social Status
Bounty hunters are in a caste of their own in most societies. The seedier elements hold them at arm's length, mistrusting them as sellswords and thugs for hire. If one should be a highly reputable hunter then you will at least be granted respect out of fear.
In the higher levels of societies, bounty hunters are treated like dangerous dogs off a leash. They are only given an amount of respect if their reputation is one to warrant it.
