Galea, Helm

A metal open-faced helm with a protruding rounded neck guard that sweeps blows away from the neck and back. Hinged cheek guards protected the jaw, while still providing an unobstructed view, and were laced with a leather tie. A horizontal band above the brow reinforced the helm, and protected the eyes from downward strikes. Banding, riveted embellishments, and a dyed horsehair plumes were common to show status or station above rank and file footmen.
