Sythis the Betrayer

The third head of the Three-Headed Serpent, Sythis is the god of betrayal, an agent of chaos within the chaotic Empire of Stygis who has become the primary god of the Second Empire. Depicted as rival, consort and constant betrayer of the Fearmonger, their interaction is a mad dance, mediated by the influence of Asphyx the Slayer.   Sythis has a wide variety of depictions, from riches to poverty, in all stages of Virin-yal 'evolution', although most commonly he appears as a manavi aray in the robes of an adviser. Prior to the rise of the new Empire, he tended to only appear in the background of religious art dedicated to the other gods, with his own shrines being dark and shrouded in cloths, devoid of figural images. In the Great Empire he was never shown as an ascended Sagass, but in the second his shrines now boast imperial statues mirroring the old icons of Stygis; a snake-bodied man (human or petari) wearing the One Crown of the Empire, his head surrounded by the many serpent heads of an ascended Virin-yal.   While the god himself is incapable of mustering a manifestation with any kind of vitality - a limitation imposed by his status as a dead god - he is always depicted as a living deity in the current Empire.
