Seven Scales

The Petari speak little of their creators. They name them, when they name them at all, the Lords of the Lost Clutch, considering those gods to have failed their creations. According to Petari mythology, the Lords of the Lost Clutch created the petari to be the equals of any other lineage, but placed them in circumstances which led to them being persecuted and subjugated, by the Dragonborn of Ladonia, the High Elves of the Regime, the Orcs of the Legions, or the Virin-yal who emerged from their own communities.   While the 'coldfok' - those still living in bondage in Ladonia - developed their culture in resistance to that of their masters, those who fled from the Ophionic Empire for the holts of the Scutora, the independent travelling clutches, and the colonies of Suto owed much to the influence of the culture deitie known as the Seven Scales. These gods brought the petari the building blocks for a new civilisation, and specifically taught them to come to terms with the peculiarities of their biology: strong diurnal tendencies, perpetual hunger, and lifelong growing pains.   While the petari can resemble many different types of lower reptile - mostly lizards, but also crocodilians and sea turtles - their gods never take these forms. Instead, each is associated with and depicted as a single body part, and depicted as a dinosaur, one of the pre-Cataclysm reptiles that survive in isolated areas.   Toothed Jaw is the primary god of the pantheon, known as the High Crown or the King of Kings. He is depicted in the form of the mighty Regisaur, and worshipped as the god of war, rage, leadership, defence, honour and power. His hunger is the hunger that drives and gives purpose, and as such he is also the patron of trappers and hunters.   Open Gullet is the god of community and family, the guardian of the tribe, god of thought, sleep and endurance. She rules the hunger that binds and unites, the anticipation of a shared meal in a place of common safety and belonging. She is depicted in the form of the massive Altisaur.   Spined Back is the god of the sun which brings strength each day. She is a god of fire, power, status and battle, the patron of cometitions and sports. She is depicted as the plated Stegosaur, and worshipped especially by soldiers and athletes, who most feel her hunger, the hunger for attainment and glory.   Swinging Tail is the god of the waters, both still and flowing, and so takes the form of a great Plesiosaur. They are the god of ambitionand of punishment, of both hubris and nemesis, as well as of motion and speed. They represent the overwhelming hunger which swamps good judgement and sense.   Gripping Claw is the god of the air, depicted in the form of the Aerosaur, one of the largest winged creatures on all Aiaos, surpassed only by the greatest of Dragons. A trickster and experimenter, he is the god of adaptability, but also the humility to recognise the need for a new approach. He is also the fertility god, representing the hunger for legacy and continuity.   Leather Shield is the god of life and birth, the guardian of the nest and the sentinel at the doors of death. He is the god of renewal, and thus of the moon that renews itself, depicted in the form of the many-horned Ceratops. His is the hunger to persist, simply to continue existing in defiance of time and entropy.   Lidded Eye is the dark and enervating night, the god of stealth, cunning and deceit, but also of loyalty and truth. She is the thief in the darkness, depicted as the small and deadly Velociraptor, bright feathers faded into shadow and accompanied by a pack of celestial emanations named Sprint, Sneak, Swipe, Slice and Sever. Her hunger is simply for that which she is told she should not have, whatever that might be.
