Pillars of Aiaos

The Pillars of Aiaos are transplanar, divine structures that hold the World above the corrosive influence of the Abyss . Each of the nine pillars is forged of one of the nine Imperishable Substances, and represents one of the metaphysical concepts which formed the foundation of universal harmony in the time before the Cataclysm. The exact nature of the latter is hotly debated among the races of Aiaos.
Although theoretically indestructible, the Pillars are pitted and scarred from the efforts of countless Demons seeking to undermine creation, not to mention the picks and chisels of the arcanists, smiths and artificers who have sought out samples of the materials to use in their Magic. It is of course no easy thing to harvest such samples - not only are the substances nigh indestructible, but to cut one of the pillars is sacrilege against creation - nor to work them, but they are powerful.
Each pillar is the keystone of one of the Hells, which defends it against violation, unless the Devils' need for Imperishable Substances outweighs their need to preserve the Pillars.
