Nome of the Tall Ships
Sheltered on the southern coast of the Bay of Fishers, the Grand Duchy of Holohai was gifted with fair weather, easy harbours and a wealth of timber in its verdant forests, which made it a natural maritime power. Protected by the harsh currents to the east, it was spared the fate of becoming a landing for either the Legion or the Regime, and its masters – the Holohai dynasties of Human- and Sea Elf-blooded water Genasi – established themselves as the masters of the delta trade after the northern bay became the home of the Hobgoblins and the Free Mobs, neither of whom had much interest in or skill at ship-building or sailing.
Secure in their own strengths, Holohai was slow to join The Elysian Federation, and ultimately did so largely in reaction to their sworn enemies, the neighbouring Duchy of the Crashing Rocks, doing the same. To hold out would have been to invite the Duchy to drag the weight of the Federation into the feud, and the Federation’s diplomats knew that only too well, welcoming the Holohai in CY31.15.
The Grand Duke retains power as nomarch, and traditionally maintains a staunchly independent stance. Although many in the court seek stronger ties with other nomes, especially when those might be to their own benefit, this convention of non-involvement protects the nome as a whole from getting drawn into others' disputes. The electors of the nome are the Master of Ships, the Master of the Harbour and the Master of the Light, the Duke’s Lord Chancellor and Lord Chamberlain, and the Primarchs of the Traveller and the Builder.
