Kobold Callings

While they are a single lineage, Kobolds have three distinct morphemes. Individual kobolds seem to hatch with a morpheme that is clearly apparent, but not obviously prescribed by their immediate parentage, broader ancestry or even by environmental factors. Most warrens believe that the morphemes are a sign of 'Kulmarak's plan' and use the word 'calling' to describe them, while others consider them purely random.   In both instances, however, a hatchling's calling is seen as a solid guide to their place in society. The most common calling is the calling of the stone. In kobold, such individuals are - both singly and collectively - called erd, colloquially known as diggers. Erd are marked by a relatively robust physique, including a long, strong tail, and broad hands with strong claws. Not all Erd work at expanding the warren, but they typically make a life in the warren, or sometimes in subterranean occupations like mining or sanitation. Outsiders sometimes see the erd as an underclass, but this is because the warren is seen as a lower status dwelling then the surface. In practice, the women is the centre of a Kobold community, and the shambles is a respectable, if unglamorous, foreign posting.   Most of those in the shambles, and the group most visible to outsiders, are the ird, or skywalkers. The ird follow the calling of the dust. Born with a slighter form, short tails and smaller hands, the real diagnostic of an ird child is their large eyes, ear-flops and nostrils, indicative of keen senses. Ird hatchlings tend to be schooled to take up the role of negotiating with surface dwellers, in both political and mercantile settings. The perception of the ird as a ruling class is influenced by a tendency to provide the Warren's negotiators with rich clothes and accessories in order to present an image to trading partners.   The rarest morpheme is the urd, the calling of the sky. These kobolds have a slight build, long and slender tails, and wings. Naturally, these flyers tend to live on the surface, or at least to go out of the warrens to fly. They are viewed as possessing a rarefied perspective, and often fulfil, if not exactly leadership roles, then positions of respected counsel. An urd will not always be obeyed, but they will be listened to.   A kobold's calling may inform their choice of Path, but is not considered prescriptive.
