Celestial Watchers

Sometimes, usually in response to a determined petition from a mortal congregation, the divine will sanctify an area, and choose to enforce that sanctity with an eternal custodian. Such custodians are Celestials, but given a moronym at their creation and shaped into an unflinching protector, with neither compunction nor remorse for any deed done in pursuance of their duty. Such protectors include celestials of the Doraean, Primal, Urban and Transient Orders.   Doraeans, also called lunars, are powerful celestials who tend to be assigned to watch over great treasures. Swift and ruthless, they are unflinching in the defence of their charge and the punishment of would-be thieves. For so long as their vigil continues, they are ageless and timeless, their moronym protecting them from time and dissolution. Should their duty end, however, in failure or the completion of its term, a Doraean will rapidly break down into stardust.   For this reason, and perhaps because they are the most powerful celestials to be set to act as warders, it has been known for Doraeans to confuse the perpetuation of their duty with its performance, and thus to value their duty - and existence - over their actual purpose. These lunars may even refuse to acknowledge the time to yield their charge, or pursue a thief beyond all sense or purpose in defiance of their own end.   Celestials of the Primal orders may be set to act as warden for a sacred landscape, somewhere natural and also sacred. Such celestials often take the form of 'pure beast' - a unicorn, qulin, coatl and the like - and defend their territory against all comers with a mixture of unearthly wonder and bloody violence. Evidence suggests that primal wardens are never reclaimed, going on even without a viable purpose until death releases them.   Urban celestials may, on rare occasions, be given charge of a constructed building or settlement. These wardens are usually bound up in a moronym so complete that they seem - perhaps even to themselves - to be merely long-lived mortal custodians, their powers shrouded, save at absolute need. Unlike most warders, they almost never seem like celestials at all.   Transient celestials, those with links to planar Magic and travel, may be bound to material form to keep watch over a permanent planar gate. Typically dwelling within the gate that they oversee, they are charged to use their powers to prevent the use of the gates by all but the faithful of their master.
