Bungara

The last port of the Ophionic Empire, Bungara is also known as the Fortress Port. It is fearfully defended, with vast sea walls enclosing the deepwater harbour, great earthworks guarding the landward side, and four imposing forts watching the approaches: two from the land and two from the sea. The city has an oddly mixed reputation. It is feared as a haven for pirates and slaves, but also strives to awe and welcome those who visit with money, either to purchase its goods, to ransom friends and family, or simply to indulge in the services of its pleasure houses and expert pharmacists.   The Inner City is surrounded by high walls. At its centre, raised on an artificial hill, is the keep, the stronghold within the stronghold, where the palace of the Governor and the Temple of the Three-Headed Serpent are located. The rest of the Inner City is home to priests, nobles, wealthy merchants and slavers, and the Grand Arena which houses public sporting events such as races, combat and executions.   The deepwater harbour is shielded by its walls, and its waters teem with deadly craits. To either side the sprawl harbours receive coastal boats, while beyond the city walls, fishing communities line the shore. The loose sprawl of the Outer City lies between the city walls and the Dyke, an ancient earthwork. Beyond that a shanty town extends several more miles, occupied largely by the slaves of Bungara. The precipitous spire of Python Tower keeps watch for enemies and escapees, while the squat, square bulk of the Adder Keep houses the troops that respond to the Tower's alerts.   Along the coast, the imposing walled harbour is flanked by the so called sprawl harbour, a line of wharfs, jetties and piers running from the eastern extent of the inner city wall to the Western. This extended anchorage is Bungara's commercial port, while the deepwater harbour houses warships and slaving galleys. Out to sea, the harsh lines of Mamba's Watch loom up, both a lighthouse and a watchtower. Further out, the Craitfort sits atop a rocky island, bristling with weapons and arcane defences.   Bungara is the feif of House Arzash, a renowned noble line of the old Empire, whose head, Lord Kyriy Arzash; is a sagass at least twice as old as the Second Empire. Surviving the fall in the security of the never-breached fortress-port, House Arzash is the largest, wealthiest and - after House Isseth - most powerful in the Empire. Its influence is curbed only by the enmity of the cults, whose temples it stripped to hire mercenaries during the city's isolation. To this day, and with their importance restored, the temples of the Three-Headed Serpent in Bungara are almost ostentaciously modest, with blank facades and little ornamentation.
