Gorvan Hart

Councilor Gorvan Hart

Gorvan Hart is a an Arcanist and adventurer. He spent his early years studying in the Royal Academy but he soon found that a more hands-on style of learning suited him better and left to see the world. He even left Aheila for a decade or so to visit other countries. He did most of his work, however, in The Howling Plains, studying the ancient secrets of the ruins there. He returned with a completely new, innovative take on magical theory, with new, unheard-of spells in his repertoire. Upon his return, he nominated himself for a seat on The Council and campaigned for a whole year. He was extremely effective in his campaign and won his seat by an absolute landslide.   Having seen the violence of the world outside Kaisu, Gorvan fears that the nation has become too lax in its security. He has been pushing The Council to increase the size of their army and turn their research to potential military applications.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Gorvan has a sly look about him that tends to make others mistrust him. His adventures have marked his body with scars, including an especially prominent one that cuts jaggedly across his face. He's got a lean and athletic build from years of adventuring. Tending towards drama, and embracing the reputation of a bad boy he's acquired, he dresses in dark clothes with bold silhouettes that gives him a very villainous appearance.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Gorvan displayed a powerful magical talent at a very young age - only thirty years old. His family were tavern owners in Yahven, but Gorvan was restless, and at the young age of 80, he decided that Academy life was not for him. He joined an expedition to The Howling Plains. The real world came as a shock to Gorvan - for the first time he realized that not every nation was like Kaisu. He saw the power struggles of Vesmos, but what truly terrified him were the monstrous tribes of The Howling Plains. Never before had he encountered such brutality, and the idea of that reaching Kaisu shook him to his very core.   At 150 years old, he decided to leave Aheila. He traveled the world, and he saw the way other nations bickered and fought. He also saw the way some of them eyed Aheila, looking for an opportunity to expand. He learned new magical theories from faraway lands, and when he was ready, he returned with the confidence he needed to venture back into the Howling Plains. It was here that he discovered ancient magics, long lost to the ravages of time. When he returned to Kaisu, it was with explosive new ideas and a newfound drive for politics. The ideas he brought back to the academy revolutionized the way the Arcane department thought of magic, bringing a new wave of advancement. Taking credit for the new era of advancement, Gorvan used this accomplishment to nominate himself for a seat on the Council. He campaigned quite successfully and won the seat, which he has held for the past 18 years.

Education

Gorvan's education had a heavy focus on Arcana. In the Royal Academy, he established a foundational understanding of magic, but during his travels he learned many different schools of thought and developed his own magical theories. From his travels he also picked up several languages and while he is by no means an expert in most of them, he has a conversational mastery.

Morality & Philosophy

Many would see Gorvan as selfish and power hungry because he nominated himself for a seat on The Council, but Gorvan's interest in politics have less to do with personal ambition and more to do with fear that Kaisu is wholly unprepared for what dangers lurk in the world. That is not to say Gorvan has no personal ambitions, but they have more to do with personal, magical power. He is an ends justifies the means kind of guy and doesn't care what enemies he makes doing what he has to do. His early excursions into The Howling Plains scarred him and left him hyper aware of danger, and as such he tends towards paranoid.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Gorvan's goals for the country revolve around readying it for what he sees as inevitable threats. For himself, he's interested in forwarding his own magical power and finding new and innovative ways to wield magic. Overly concerned with his own safety, he feels that advancing his own magical power is the only way to feel secure.

Virtues & Personality perks

Gorvan is a brilliant Arcanist with a knack for turning theory into practice. He is extremely charming and remarkably persuasive, embracing his bad-boy persona and using it to his advantage. He is a forward thinker and has a way of seeing the bigger picture.

Vices & Personality flaws

Gorvan is vain and self-absorbed. His fascination with his appearance means he spends an inordinate amount of money on his clothes and appearance. He is paranoid and sees danger lurking around every corner, making him slow to trust and quick to assume the worst in people.
