Choua Lee

Councilor Choua Lee

Choua Lee is the very example of Kaisu's meritocracy at work. Her family were farmers, and she grew up with almost no education. Her days were long and filled with hard work. Even as a child, she was expected to help around the farm. In an effort to help her family, she came up with a new irrigation system to improve the efficiency of watering the fields, drawing water from nearby stream and siphoning it to the fields so they no longer had to use the well. For years, her system went undiscovered, used only by her family but that changed when a geology professor on a field trip took note of it. Fascinated, he asked her about it and spent the next several weeks studying it and writing a paper on it. When he published it, he cited her as the invention's creator. Within the next several years, the irrigation system was deployed all across Kaisu, increasing yield dramatically. It was this achievement that saw her nominated the elected to The Council.
Choua is a practical woman and has little patience for arguing hypothetical and debating ideals. Her focus is on concrete measures the Council can take to affect change. Far less educated than the other members of The Council, she makes a point of reminding them of their reliance on the working class.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Choua is thin and lean, and the years of living in Yahven have softened her. No longer are her hands calloused from working the fields, and no longer does she dress in coarse, cotton work clothes. She dresses in loose airy dresses that hide her form, and with no need to work, she's grown out her hair impractically long.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Growing up on the farm with her parents, Choua has known hard work her whole life. She was a middle child, with six brothers and sisters. They were all extremely close, and her childhood was full of noise, children all playing the fields together, scrambling for their fair share at the dinner table, and bickering with each other. This sort of life was blissful for Choua, even if the work was hard and the days long. Even if money was tight and they mostly ate off their own produce, even if they were crowded in their modest house and they had to bring the animals inside on winter nights, Choua would not have traded anything in the world for the life she had. When she designed the irrigation system for her parents, she didn't even consider implications it could have for other people, or how it would change her own life.   It was years later that her invention was discovered by a professor from the Royal Academy of Kaisu who was out of a field trip. He was completely taken with the invention, and with her, and stayed as a house guest for four weeks to write his paper. When he returned to Yahven, he invited Choua to return with him as his bride - an offer which Choua declined. When he published his paper a year later, Choua suddenly found she was very popular. She did her best to ignore, but then came the nomination. At first, she had no intention of accepting the nomination but her parents insisted she at least consider it. Under their insistence, she traveled to Yahven to discuss the implications of the nomination and what her impact would be if she became a Councilor. Though she was reluctant to leave home, her family and the professor that nominated her convinced her of the good she could do if she accepted the position. The following year, she moved to Yahven as the newest member of The Council .   Living in Yahven has been difficult for Choua. She misses her family dearly and she feels out of place amongst the academics. She takes occasional trips out to the countryside to see her family, which is a welcome relief from the isolation of her life in the city, but those visits are few and far between, as her work requires her to be present in Yahven almost constantly.

Education

Choua has little to know education. After joining the castle she painstakingly taught herself to read, but otherwise she has made a firm decision not to take any classes at the Academy.

Morality & Philosophy

Choua is a woman of action. She tends not to put stock in promises and ideals, preferring instead practical solutions to actual problems. With a no-nonsense personality, she has no problem calling out anyone - even the other Councilors - on their bullshit. She believes that her duty in The Council is to remind them of the layperson's concerns and keep them honest.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Choua tends to just go with the flow and lacks a real strong sense of motivation towards any particular goal. She just wants to live a happy, meaningful life and do whatever she does well.

Virtues & Personality perks

As a woman of action, Choua is good at getting things done. Not easily impressed, she tends to hold her own even in the face of those who would claim to be her better. In spite of her renown and her position, she has let none of it go to her head and maintains a very down-to-earth attitude.

Vices & Personality flaws

Choua is not personable in any sense. Even though she is lonely, she makes no effort to make friends in the city, perpetuating her own isolation. She can be single-minded and often dismissive of other people's ideas.
