Aspects

History

…before mentioned in Salvar’s theories of arcane musings. All arcane forces, once they reach a certain threshold, must have a physical link to this world. An anchor if you will. For the longest time, we thought that the lay lines themselves were those anchors. After finding old angelic writings, the workings of the brightest minds across the ages, and a joining of cultures we found that the "chosen" of the lay lines are the physical anchors keeping the lay lines here in this world. This surprised even the Divine themselves, aside from two. Adnah and Heidi claim, after we rediscovered this, that they had known this truth of this world and that it was simply something others had to find out on their own. Why? Hell if we know. Never forget that even the Divine themselves withhold information that could be vital to the people of this world…   …I use such inflection when I say chosen because we aren't really sure if the Laylines choose anyone in any manner that would denote a will. Aspects have been so varied it seems random. The current aspect of water is an 87 year old human with no legs who was a baker his entire life until becoming an aspect 12 years ago. The current aspect of air is an infant just a few months old. The current Aspect of Fire is a direbear somewhere in the northern reaches of Urlon. When an Aspect dies it seems that the Laylines randomly and violently lash out all over the planet searching for something strong enough for them to anchor too. Most mortals that get picked end up dying from the magical shock. The only thing common among them is that those who learn how to harness their powers achieve great things. An Aspect who has the proper training can perform magical feats akin to master level mages, though only in regards to their element. Aspects cannot hide their choosing. Once a lay line has chosen them their body becomes sprinkled with runic marks upon their skin and many a magic user can sense them long before they see them…
...with that said old stories of people bursting into flame, drowning on land, and being struck by lightening underground are now thought to be those who died when the laylines lashed out to find an anchor. While this does much to remove wonder from these stories, let us not forget the powers we are dealing with...   -excerpts from Old Folk Tales Revisited by Aston Gerford
